When it comes to kitchen remodeling, things can get out of hand pretty fast-
From personal experience, the best results come from strategic planning, careful consideration of the space at hand, and doubling the expectant time of completion-
This home Reno that my husband & I just finished came with its own unique set of challenges. Our home was built & styled in 1929, a stunning brick craftsman style home, in the need of some major Rehab.
From plaster repair to laying down engineered hardwood flooring, we learned more than a few things on our journey.
From our most recent project here are the best tips for a full blown kitchen Rehab we have figured out along the way:
Chose your paint hue according to the overall feel you want for the space, ignore the “on-trend” colors. A good solution here is if you are feeling very bold, go a couple of shades lighter for a similar effect, but a less dramatic outcome. Light & Airy? Earthy? Calm? Comfortable?
Before: Gloom & Quite Orange
After: Clean, Airy & Peaceful
2. Evaluate your space several days before, as well as the night before beginning your remodel-creating somewhat of a game plan & a list of materials- by the next day you will be surprised at the ideas that form while you’re asleep.
3. If you are planning on painting your space, I highly suggest cleaning the night before, with dish soap and a pro-grade degreaser. This will give everything the chance to fully dry overnight, and be ready for primer and paint first thing.
4. Remember that everyone has a budget, although it may desirable to completely gut and destroy the current space- that’s not always an option. A good middle ground is settling for budget-friendly Rehab instead of a full Renovation.
A Rehab is focused on deep cleaning the space, painting, changing hardware, and overall improving the functionality of the space. This may include removing/adding certain cabinets, adjusting countertops, changing out appliances- but NOT demolition of the entire space.
5. When its time to go shopping don’t forget to think out of the box- Lowes is not the ONLY place to shop for materials; overstock stores, Amazon, and stores like Big Lots can be an excellent way to find the same materials at a fraction of the cost. Finding a pallet of hardwood flooring at an outlet store, and curtains off Amazon can save your wallet & your sanity.
