Seven Deadly Plagues

The enemy had many forms—

first there was bamboo,

a forest that I cut by hand

until I changed the view.

Next was poison ivy,

God’s original sin;

my punishment for pulling it

was boils on my skin.

The rodents came in secret    

and hid within the house;

it took two years to get them all,

but now there’s not a mouse.

The ants then started swarming,

searching for my food;

I stamped and squashed and sprayed

until their army was subdued.

The centipedes were legion,

a million legs or more;

I slayed them all and left

their twitching legs upon the floor.

And then there came the hornets

like winged knives for hire,

I purged them from the very earth

with gasoline and fire.

Within the wooden siding,

the birds had made their nests;

I tore them out, the last to fall

now vanquished like the rest.

A house is more than furniture

and family and mirth—

it is an endless battle

with the forces of the earth.

   Still baffled by Tumblr’s (relatively) new habit of blurring every photo I upload. I put the photo into the post, it appears clear, then blurs when I click “Post”. 

   Well, ANYWAY, venting aside, I’m trying to pack and store artwork. In my heart I know this is the ‘kiss of death’ for the pieces stored. If I haven’t sold them in however many years of showing them, I’m probably not going to. And when I go to pull them out of storage, I’ll find they’ve been ruined in some unpredictable way. Sudden minor roof leakage directly over the spot I put my paintings? One (1) squirrel breaks in and gnaws one (1) package in the attic - the one with the paintings. Chimney fire w/ smoke damage? Whatever, there is no safe way to store artwork unless you’re a museum with dedicated, climate-controlled storage space. I have close to two hundred pieces of artwork in my inventory - a few too many to hang on the walls. My habit of stacking them in the corners of the workroom creates other problems; I know I need to tidy things up in here. I just feel a sense of dread about it. 

So; away they go. My attic access is as ‘quaint’ as most of the other features of this old farmhouse; there is a staircase of mini-stairs (full height but only 6 inches deep) that can only be accessed by crawling overtop of a kitchen counter. It is not tidy up there.
