This Memorial Day, I can’t think of a better way to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country and our freedoms than by encouraging every single person reading this to engage in our Democracy and to fight to protect the things that make us American! While this may be inconvenient for the current administration and their supporters… America is, and has always been, a nation of immigrants. You don’t even have to search that many history books (or even be that educated) to prove and know this! AMERICA HAS ALWAYS BEEN A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS! Before it was largely the Irish, Italians, and Germans. Now it’s mostly people from the Philippines, China, Cuba, India, and yes, Mexico! People come here because they want to be a part of the American Dream. People who want the freedom to love who they love, or to pray to the God they believe in, or to raise their children somewhere safe and where they’ll have more opportunities! Why are we so afraid of the thing that we have always been? The thing, that I believe, contributes to our greatness! Many of our greatest Leaders, Performers, Politicians, Doctors, Inventors, Scientists, and Soldiers are immigrants or their parents were first generation immigrants! Separating children from their parents and families is unAmerican. Scapegoating immigrants for all our problems is also unAmerican, and wrong. Liberty, Justice, Debating, Believing in a Better Tomorrow, Protesting, Diversity, Separation of Powers, Voting, Fighting for Freedom and Equality… THESE are the things that make us American. These are also the things that brave men and women lost their lives protecting. Our Democracy only works if we all engage it. Today, I remember and honor those who died protecting our way of life.
