2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod: So much Rob Zombie/White Zombie tht it's a real problem Living Dead Girl was the first song he heard an it stayed his fave, secretly. Problem - Sex Pistols. Illmerica - Wolfgang Gartner. Habits - Tove Lo because if it had come out when he was in high school he never would've stopped listening. I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges. the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to: passing out in back rooms at clubs when he's meant to go out for a set laterthe game they’d destroy everyone else at: don't even try with him when it comes to any band-based video game. Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc etc? Yeah.the emoticon they’d use most often: 🚬 for any number of things - asking someone if they have one, if they want to go have a smoke, to inform them he's going out for one. Also 😇 to Sid /all/ the time pretending he's been a good boywhat they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep: lil bit drunk, lot ready to fighttheir preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever: he has coffee at night sometimes, very sweet. Never in the mornings.how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump: quality time with Sid, preferably on his knees, since he gave up the drugs. Or, occasionally, turning up somewhere as part of the crowd rather than being in charge of the musicwhat they wanted to be when they grew up: a skateboarder. He was terrible about it.their favorite kind of weather: doesn't have any. He is very much an indoor guy. Sid likes ball games, though, so clear and not too overly sweltering is good.thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?): he spent a lot of middle school/high school hollering and didn't realize til he got older that he didn't sound awful when he sings. He still doesn't like to hear it and definitely prefers keeping headphones on while he sings. Sid likes hearing it, though.how/what they like to draw or doodle: music!! He can read and write it, like Colette can, and he spends a lot of time taking down little things to show her. He also doodles little half-assed comic panels a lot, generally pretty violent

"I have a lovely family, don't I?" she asks, her fingers curling along the back of his neck beneath the mess of curls at his nape. "I have a home and my husbands and my little girl. In six months, I'll have another screaming baby and I can't wait. What more could I possibly want?" She nudges at him until he looks up at her face and he understands those things people say about pregnant women glowing. Colette is beautiful and pink in the cheeks and she is trying to let him down easy, he thinks, without him having to make a fool of himself.

"Absolutely nothing," he agrees with her, shuffling his feet against their nice hardwood floors. "You must be really happy, Colette. I'm glad for you." Inside, Toby is dying to break something. He has other systems of getting his way these days but this kind of hurt makes him want to destroy, smash things like he used to before he understood how much relief there was elsewhere. For now, he clenches his hands into painfully tight fists and looks away from Colette's still soft face so that she won't see him slowly cracking. "I should probably be-"

"Toby." She turns his face toward her again and this time she looks concerned, though the smile is still playing on her lips. "You gave me the wrong answer. What's happened to you?" His look of confusion only furrows her brows further, like she's confused as to what's supposed to be happening here. "The Toby I knew would've answered that I was missing him. That I could still have all of this and want him. What happened to him?" Her fingers stroke along his cheekbones and then his lips, firm and real.

If she wants that Toby, the Toby that she met years ago and remolded, shaped until he was a new creature, well he'll give him to her. He leans up and bites at the thin line of her stretched bottom lip and coaxes her into a kiss. This part is always like making a pitch, giving a taste of the shiny new product so the customer gets excited about it. But this is Colette and she knows everything he has to give and to take, everything that happens inside his head when she licks at his teeth and slides her fingers along the knobby line of his spine. She knows he'll gasp when she presses a firm thumb into the sharp ridge of a hip bone, break for air and breathe hard against her cheek.

"What about Cody?" are the words he feeds into the shell of her ear, afraid and not one bit prepared to feel bad if she doesn't have the go-ahead to be doing this with him. "Josh?" he affixes after a moment, remembering.

"Why do you think no one's here?" she mumbles back to him, and then she's easing away and laying herself out on the roomy sofa, pulling the material of her dress tight across the little bump low in her stomach.

They bump at a baseball game. Not bump into each other, really, or not physically at least. It's more like their lives collide again, more gently but more rattling all the same. She's pregnant, for one, though only showing slightly. The second most obvious thing (which would be the first for anyone else, he imagines) is the little girl propped on her hip. He knows she has a daughter, in theory, had listened to her talk about pregnancy as a werewolf and her ambivalent feelings about passing on the gene to her children. He'd recommended good music to play to her belly at night to keep the kid from kicking, calm shit he normally won't touch with a stick. So he knew, of course. But to see an actual child, hair a ginger mess like her mother's and one tiny, chubby fist stuffed into her mouth...he's overwhelmed.

Her name is Delia and the baby in mommy's belly is her little brother Henry. Or, well, Henry seems to be still just out of reach for her, but Hank comes out sharp and clear. Colette is no different for having one and a half children. She points out Cody and Josh in the stands and explains that Josh's boyfriend RJ is playing, which catches Toby out of the blue. He'd only ever took note of RJ being smoking hot, not his actual full name or occupation. He's only at the game because Sid loves baseball and he likes stadium food better than his own cooking.

Apparently the three of them are married now, RJ not included, and have an actual house together. Nothing fancy, and there's still no baby grand piano in a sitting room, but they're happy and living well. He introduces her to Sid who had been fussing with the vendor over what the french fries had been cooked in. Perils of dating a vegan. Sid's face lights up and any fear Toby might have had lifts; the two women are both too steady to be jealous or petty. Colette asks if Toby still sits at the kitchen table naked and Sid laughs.

The rest of the evening slips away from him until his set is up at midnight. He's been dying for a nicotine fix for two hours by then and he escapes out into the alley behind the place to light one up, glancing up and down to make sure it's clear. There are a couple of girls sucking face down the way, one's skirt hiked up far enough that he can see the other girl's fingers digging into her panties, but that's nothing worse than he'd see inside the bar. Before he knows it he's wasted a cigarette, letting it burn down while he strains his ears to hear what they're saying to one another. It's easier to focus once the girl against the wall has come and starts straightening her skirt, flipping him the bird when she catches him looking. He waves genially, whistling at her girlfriend who waves back, laughing. They escape around the next corner and he guesses they're going back in through the rear door, to the back rooms. He tries to keep away from there, doesn't need all of his paycheck going up his nose, but they're always right there in every club begging for his attention. He's been mostly clean for two weeks without even trying but if he doesn't get laid tonight he'll undoubtedly end up back there.
