Rewatched 'The Lying Detective'. I have to admit, when I first watched it five and a half years ago, I felt a little confused during the second act, but the climax was so good that it was the second episode of the show I rewatched ('The Final Problem' being of course the first). Steven Moffat's best script from all four seasons, it is very well structured, has a good pacing, appropriate humour and touching drama. Toby Jones' plays the most terrifying villain of the whole show (and Nikita Prozorowsky - Никита Прозоровский - does a perfect voice acting for him in the Russian version). It is often overlooked that Culverton Smith is loosely based on Jimmy Savile, who was a popular media personality, but turned out to be a sex offender. The fact that the BBC had the guts to let the creators of 'Sherlock' to show such interpretation of the original Conan Doyle's antagonist is very telling. As for the others - Una Stubbs, who had her swan song as Mrs. Hudson in this episode, is just terrific (despite of the fact that Moffat didn't miss the chance to insult Mycroft and Molly through her mouth), Sian Brooke fits perfectly into the cast (I just love the scene in the psychiatrist's house, where so many of permanent characters are assembled, even for just a couple of scenes), and Katy Wix is just lovely as Nurse Cornish. Nick Hurran was again the director, but this time his style remains in harmony with other two episodes and is just perfect for the whole atmosphere of the story. And the final revelation was superb. As far as I remember, it was Sian Brooke's first scene on set, and she performed it magnificently. In a way 'The Lying Detective' is a preface to a whole new story, and as such it never disappoints.
