Universal Lending Helps Kids and Teens Grow a Business
The theme of this year’s national event, sponsored by the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation, is “Plant a Seed, Grow a Future.” Universal Lending Corporation will help participants learn how to grow their own flower pot business from scratch.
“Our goal is for employees of Universal Lending Corporation to serve as role models who inspire the boys and girls to strive to attain their full potential,” said ULC President Pete Lansing. “The kids will learn how classes like math, science, English and business can better prepare them for a variety of careers, while having fun with family members and new friends.”
Students will create a company, decorate flower pots and determine as a company whether to plant flowers or seeds in the pots. They will elect a company president and secretary, and as a group, name the company and price the product. They will create a marketing strategy and fliers to advertise their product. Older students will spend time with a Universal Lending executive to learn some of the finer points of a company’s finances. Younger students will deliver the fliers to their customers, ULC employees.
Working together, the kids also determine what to do with their profits. They can split the profits among themselves, donate the profits to the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation, or choose a combination of keeping and donating profits.
In addition to creating their own business, students will participate in other activities, including learning about the mortgage industry from ULC’s President; participating in a loan process scavenger hunt; enjoying a pizza lunch with their adult sponsors; and checking out cars in a vintage car collection. At the end of the day, students will write notes to take back to their teachers, to share with them what they learned.
