Curious baby Hiro touching everything in sight, and generally being a handful for Tadashi. 8D
Is Baby Hiro adopted as an infant or did his brother happen to be married to Fred when the accident happened?
…Honestly I can’t decide??? Both options are so cute???? So ideas for both!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
Option A: Fred was never sold one way or the other on being a parent but Tadashi’s been destined to be a dad since he was born, even as a kid he would carry around dolls that he “adopted” (fortunately Aunt Cass was very chill about letting Tadashi play with whatever toys he wanted, and she’d have bought him nice ones from the store if he wanted but Tadashi actually preferred picking out abandoned ones from thrift stores and garage sales because he thought it was sad that they didn’t have homes anymore.) So Fred new early on in the relationship that being with Tadashi long term would mean kids eventually and he was very much okay with that so maybe about a year after getting married they started looking into adoption. I think they might have actually adopted Hiro when he was a few years old because Tadashi knew that most people want to adopt babies and he wanted to give a home to a kid who would have a harder time getting a home. Tadashi and Fred met Hiro at a group home, and when Tadashi saw Hiro working on a robotics lego kit that was meant for much older kids but Hiro actually seemed to know what he was doing he was just immediately like, “…That’s him. That’s going to be our son.” And then Hiro looked up and he saw those big puppy eyes and he was just done. As soon as he was allowed to go walk around and talk to the kids he went right over to Hiro and started talking to him, and Hiro was kinda scared at first but Tadashi was so enthusiastic about the robot he was working on and started talking to him about the robots that he’d built (I’m imagining Baymax is pretty well known at this time) that Hiro warms up to him really quickly (which is rare for him, according to the people at the home Hiro never talked to any other visitors before, he barely even talks to the other kids or the people in charge.) Fred kinda wanders around saying hi to all the kids but he can immediately tell that Tadashi wants Hiro. And he’s totally fine with that but he’s kinda nervous at the same time because Hiro seems so smart and he’s got so much in common with Tadashi but will he have anything in common with him? And then finally he makes his way over to Tadashi and Hiro and Hiro sees that his shirt has Captain America’s shield on it and immediately lights up and starts talking about how much he loves superheroes and Fred’s just like, “Okay, yes, this is definitely our son.” And as soon as they go through the whole legal process Hiro comes home with them and has been with them ever since <3
Option B: (MAJOR ANGST WARNING AND HOMOPHOBIA TRIGGER WARNING AS WELL *nope, I’m totally not still bitter about the shit that happened to me when I came out and I’m definitely not projecting onto fictional characters ^^;*) Tadashi came out to his parents when he was nineteen and he brought Fred over for dinner to introduce him to them as his boyfriend. It… Did not go well. Basically he was given half an hour to pack his things and go. He was shattered. Fortunately Fred was there for him, he helped him pack and then took him home with him. Fred called his dad up to make sure it was okay for Tadashi to stay and he immediately said that it was more than okay for Tadashi to stay as long as he needed to. (Tadashi’ did not know about Aunt Cass at the time as his parents had also cut her off for coming out as bi before Tadashi was even born.) Tadashi ended up living with Fred’s family until he and Fred got married and got their own place two years later. They’d been married for about a year when Tadashi got the phone call from the police that his parents had died in an accident. He had very mixed feelings about this, for obvious reasons. What he was not prepared for was finding out that his parents had had another kid in his absence, apparently planning to “start over” and pretend like Tadashi never existed. Tadashi was understandably horrified and slightly bitter about this, but he knew that his little brother (he can hardly believe that he has a little brother) wasn’t to blame for what happened and also he knows that if it’s anything like his upbringing was the poor kid was probably emotionally and psychologically abused and is going to need someone to take care of him. Fred drives him to the hospital (Tadashi’s too shaken up to drive) and when they get there that’s when Tadashi finds out about Aunt Cass’ existence because she had also been called as a relative and both she and Tadashi are eligible for custody of Hiro. Aunt Cass is more than happy to take Hiro in, but as Hiro’s brother she wanted Tadashi to have first say in the matter. Tadashi isn’t sure what his choice is going to be (Fred tells him that he’ll support his decision no matter what his choice ends up being) until he walks into the hospital room and sees Hiro lying in the bed and he’s barely two years old and he’s covered in bruises and cuts from the accident and he’s hooked up to an IV machine and he’s just so fucking tiny and scared and alone and in a moment Tadashi knows that there’s no way that he’s going to let anyone else take Hiro home but him. He goes over to the bed and he’s trying to figure out how to explain to Hiro who he is and then Hiro looks up at him and says in the quietest, most broken way, “Daddy?” And Tadashi fucking loses it because it finally hits him that their parents are gone for good and yeah, he looks a whole hella lot like their dad so of course Hiro’s going to be hoping that it turns out his dad isn’t dead after all and how is Tadashi supposed to explain death and loss to a kid this small? Somehow he manages to stop crying enough to try to explain about the accident to Hiro, but Hiro’s smart, he already figured out what’s happened and he’s just a very alone, scared little kid not knowing what’s going to happen to him. And that’s when Tadashi tells him that he’s his older brother and even though he doesn’t know him very well yet he loves him very much and if he’s okay with it as soon as the doctors tell him that he can go he’s going to take him home with him and take care of him, because that’s what older brothers do. They take care of their little brothers. Cue a hurried few days of the rest of the Nerd Herd rushing to get Tadashi and Fred’s house kid-safe so that the social workers will let Tadashi take Hiro home while Tadashi’s dealing with the tough decisions about funerals and everything else (Aunt Cass is a saint and helps as much as she can) and also trying to look after Hiro. Hiro’s still very, very traumatized and Tadashi looks like his dad and he’s so young that he keeps getting confused because there’s this man who looks and sounds almost exactly like his dad only he’s not but Hiro wants him to be because he doesn’t know how to process the fact that his parents aren’t there anymore. And then one day while Tadashi’s with Hiro a Baymax comes in to check on Hiro and Hiro just lights up because he loves robots and Baymax always is nice and gives him a lollipop for being a good patient and that’s when it clicks for Tadashi how he’s going to get through to this kid, and then next day he brings his own Baymax–the first ever Baymax–and explains to Hiro how he invented Baymax. And Hiro is of course completely in awe but it’s the first time that Tadashi gets the feeling that Hiro understands that he’s not the dad that died, but he’s still someone who loves and cares about him. And about then is when he finally feels okay to bring in Fred (who’s been his rock through all of this) and Hiro has to adjust a bit to this new person and the fact that Tadashi’s married to Fred (because you know his parents were probably doing everything they could to make Hiro think being gay is wrong because they didn’t want their “new son” to “turn out that way”, as if it’s a fucking choice.) But eventually Hiro sees how much Tadashi loves Fred and Fred cares about him too so finally he adjusts, and by the time that he finally gets to go home with them he’s very much okay with being taken care of by his new family. (With Aunt Cass making frequent visits and providing meals and everything else that she can for her nephews, and Fred’s dad also making a point of spoiling Hiro as well.) And even though Hiro never really picks up on calling Tadashi “nii-chan” like Tadashi was trying for (he’s little, he doesn’t quite get that siblings can have such a big age gap) when he starts calling Tadashi “Papa” instead Tadashi accepts it because it means that Hiro wants him taking care of him but he understands that he’s not the same person as their father (and thank goodness for that.) Fred ends up getting the title of “Dad”, because Hiro needs something to call him, and he’s very much fine with it. And you can bet that when Hiro grows up and brings his boyfriend, Ezra, home for the first time Tadashi makes sure it’s the most amazing dinner ever because he’s going to make sure that Hiro has everything he never had. And it’s actually a very, very healing experience for him.
((Sorry this got so long, I just started writing and couldn’t stop! ^^;))
What are freds favorite pastimes with baby hiro?
AWWWWW. SO MANY CUTE IDEAS!!!!! I think since Fred wants to be an author he’s the stay at home dad so he and Hiro do a lot of things together :) Fred is definitely big on playing pretend since Hiro likes it too, and he makes sure that Hiro has the best costumes for dressup! (Never too soon to get baby nerds interested in cosplay, right? XD) They also like to watch cartoons and movies together, and Fred will read comic books out loud to Hiro! :) Oh, and Fred probably loves getting to take Hiro out on fun little day trips, like to the zoo or the museum–educational but also fun! (Tadashi loves to join them when he can ^^) Fred totally has cheesy dad shirts to wear when he and Hiro are out in public!
I saw this cute little Pikachu that had fallen off my pile of plushies looking a bit abandoned and I thought Hiro would be a wonderful owner for him, so here’s my baby with his first Pokemon--aw <3

Tadashi isn’t home as much as he’d like to be, but when he is he loves helping Hiro work on robotics projects–it’s their special thing :) He also likes getting to help teach Hiro how to cook and do martial arts! And of course he will gladly join in a family snuggle pile while watching Disney movies, and he loves to join Fred and Tadashi for trips when he can (little ones in town mostly, but also they love taking Hiro to different Disney Parks any chance they get!)
