A NEW MOBILE MEDIA KID ON THE BLOCK
At the beginning of 2011, Frans Roelofse dared to dream about a digital platform that does things differently. A free, fast-thinking playground where users can connect, do business, be entertained and make a difference in the lives of others. A virtual highway that turns any screen into a world of possibilities. For the next 3 years, Frans and his handpicked team worked tirelessly with…

Toeter - A new global Afrikaans digital home
#Articles
Since the beginning of time, man has not only had the need to share, but he also wants to do so in his own language, and that’s what all of this boils down to social media and the opportunity to share and interact in your own vernacular.
And today the needs of every Afrikaans speaking social media user are met. toeter is the world’s first Afrikaans social media network, and was created for people who want to chat to Afrikaans-speaking individuals – much like Facebook and Twitter. “toeter” is the Afrikaans word for a car hooter.
toeter, which appeared on the South African social media landscape for the first time in May 2014, is the brainchild of Frans Roelofse and his expanding team of fellow creative thinkers and doers at the toeter headquarters in Green Point, Cape Town.
“Three years ago, I realised that there was no social media platform unique to South Africa, and certainly not one for Afrikaans. I decided to start with Afrikaans, and then we can talk nice without borders, '' says Roelofse.
"We've worked hard to create a platform that can match its English counterparts, it is just a lekker way to communicate and to celebrate your own language,”Roelofse he added.
Afrikaans is the third-most-spoken mother tongue in South Africa, with about 7 million native speakers, or 13.5% of the population.
It offers a wealth of opportunities and innovations for African businesses with new and innovative ways of advertising and unique coding. Advertisers will have five or six different ways of advertising their services on the website.
Since its inception, this platform has attracted a huge fan base. There is a worldwide trend called “digital tribalism”, which means users join their own ‘tribes’ on social networks, and thus toeter will set that trend as it will also migrate to cater for other African languages.
A special feature offered by toeter is the increased message field, allowing for 160 characters per message instead of the usual 140 characters typically associated with other digital conversation platforms. “This is simply because most Afrikaans words tend to be on the longer side,” explains Roelofse.
Another distinct functionality is the ability to use punctuation marks which is rife throughout the Afrikaans mother tongue. “A strategically absent punctuation mark has often caused much bane confusion and embarrassment in social media messaging – toeter finally solves this problem in a few easy shortcut solutions” Roelofse continues.
The site has a quick registration process and has some nifty features such as breaking news and different magnete (magnets) which users can choose to follow. Magnets are celebs or big mouths who pushes content onto the platform to generate more conversation.
The timeline works just like any other social media platform: there is your homepage where you get all your news, then you find the basic follower count, along with brands or people that toeter recommends you to follow and posts shared by others you follow.
Roelofse says they also have a section for Groot toeters (GTs) and these are people who make the most noise. Users can follow the GTs and chat together. The current GTs include Emo Adams, Navi Redd, Fokofpolisiekar and Karen Zoid.
Once a user registers for the service, they can start to “toet” to their heart’s desire, on their own station, the “toeter highway.”
