So it took me over 4 hours to get home from Toronto last night!
I tried to make this short but...
I left work before 5 and reached my destination (gourmet donuts with friends) after taking a bus and subway at around 6. It had been pouring when I left but everyone at the bus stop figured that by the time we all reached our subway stops it would let up. this was not the case, clearly.
The donut place was closed due to leaky roof so I headed to a cafe/bookstore across the way that a friend works at. it was her day off but she was there.
Unfortunately, their basement flooded and sewage backed up. While I was there. I stayed long enough to tell our other friends to go home. I waited about half an hour for a street car, then when I got to the subway station, the whole subway line was closed. I dashed to another line but it had closed right before I got there.
Then I walked for about 40 minutes all the way to union station and it was CRAZY at the bus terminal there. I feel bad for the Transit Officer. People hurled a lot of verbal abuse at him and I think he even got shoved at one point too. I was slightly afraid it was going to degenerate into violent rioting when a bus came after nearly an hour and filled up rather quickly All of us who remained were pretty upset at that point. Some of us more than others. I told the Officer that I was afraid of rioting so he'd better radio his boss and get us another bus. I think he followed my advice and was able to convey just how tense the situation was becoming. One lady called me a bitch and told me to fuck off when I asked to please stop yelling so the Transit Officer could try to do his job.
Once I was on the bus I chatted with the people around me for a bit then decided I didn't even want to deal anymore and put on some North & South for a bit. Then even though I was supposed to be the 2nd stop I saw my station coming up. We then turned the opposite direction for the 1st stop. Apparently our driver had had to detour. It was such a relief when I finally got home around 10:30.
Thankfully we had power at home.
This morning most of our servers at work were down until half an hour ago. The website hasn't been working properly since last night. And we're nowhere near the downtown core! I'm still having issues with the internal information system and wifi but thank God the LAN connection is running again and I have email and the landline phones are working!
I know other people had it harder. And we didn't even have it as bad as Calgary. And no one died or anything. But it was AWFUL and it's STILL raining!
I'm trying to figure out why there were so many commuters stranded in Toronto. I feel like that's a thing that should have been addressed before it happened. Why weren't steps taken to keep people safe?
The storm is over and the power is back on but I can still hear emergency vehicle sirens wail outside my window. The sirens are a reminder of the work that must be dealt with as a result of the storm.
