Watching Together and man I love funger
I disagree with almost all the posts on here about the ending of Together. I don't think it's a movie about codependency or about not being able to leave a toxic relationship. I think a lot of you are projecting toxicity onto their relationship that isn't there. I think (as someone else pointed out) it's very intentional that it's Tim who in the beginning is backing out of sex which is causing tension in the relationship, because if it was the other way around, it would be widely read as Tim being toxic to Millie, and that is what the movie is trying to avoid.
All of their frustrations with each other are valid but they are working to be better together. Tim put the relationship on shaky ground by being scared of commitment, but he still moved for Millie's career even though he probably knew it meant gambling with his own. He "took the plunge" for her in his way that he could. Millie rightfully is frustrated with him and his weird behaviours, she tries to get him help the way that she can, but the fundamental issue is he doesn't know how to communicate and she doesn't know how to listen.
As for the end. When they were fusing before, the water did not take over their thoughts. They felt the pull towards each other but everything they said and chose to do remained logical. There's not really a basis to think the water has the kind of mind control people are wanting it to, they just saw the word 'cult' and ran with it. First Tim was going to kill himself to save Millie, then when Millie was bleeding out he could have let her die to free him. Instead he chose to live as them to save her. And when they look happy fused? It's because they resolved their issues. Tim showed he can make commitments to their relationship. Millie can feel all his memories now and understand him. They feel each others worries and love despite the worries and why wouldn't that ending make things better for them?
and like the way the directors talked about 'Tillie' as 'oh they seem like a fun person to be friends with'. I just don't buy that the end is meant as a tragedy. also the body horror is seeing eyeballs mush together on screen btw not the fact of existing in the same body with someone else.
when is it my turn though for a wedding in a cutie little symposium-themed chapel in the woods. ive already got the other part of it down 💯
Hey babe don't you think it's super weird how this supernatural thing that's haunting us is thematically complimenting our pre-existing issues and trauma? Anyway, pass me that holy water real quick
