TONE LOC-”WILD THING”
Before rap music became totally scary to middle of the road America there was a brief period where it almost threatened to become novelty music. No, we didn’t get “Chipmunk Rap” (at least I don’t think we did) but we did get stuff like this, built around a Van Halen sample. As NWA, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew and Geto Boys started freaking people out, Tone’s music career waned but he found his true calling, doing cartoon voiceovers.
6/14/17 10:05AM U2-”BAD (LIVE)”
Ok full confession: I like U2 despite many of their obvious problems (Bono, hiding money in tax shelters, Bono). This song commits one one of their biggest sins: the music all kinda sounds the same. This song could well be called “GENERIC U2 song” like if I was searching for it on a stock/knockoff library like Jingle Punks. They were in full-on earnest mode and had yet to do things like have electronic mumbling songs or dress up like the Village People. Although it would be really funny if Bono brought back his mullet for their latest oldies tour.

THE BANGLES-”WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN”
After the Purple Nurple gave them a signature tune that didn’t really sound like any of their other music, the Bangles followed it up with a chimer from obscure New Wave troubadour Jules Shear and then this, their most overplayed record. I still have my Faulty Products 12″ somewhere in my Piles’o’stuff, and the college radio dork in me sometimes wonders what would have happened had this band skipped the Aquanet and all the mediocre/novelty songs written by dudes. But hey you can’t argue with success!

JOHN COUGAR-”HURTS SO GOOD”
Before he became all tasteful and Americana-y and made records kind of like CCR if you took away their beer and weed, this was the song that launched Johnny Cougar’s real grownup career. MTV aired the music video on the quarter hour between stock NASA footage and Triple-J attempting to say something "hip” about Gary Numan, which meant prehistoric cable viewers enjoyed the world’s last “Born Losers”-type biker gang gyrating while John Cougar’s groundbreaking leather crotchgear was thrust into their Zeniths. I’m sure that wasn’t his idea either.
6/12/17 1:47PM THE GUESS WHO-”NEW MOTHER NATURE”
The Guess Who was kind of like Canada’s answer to Three Dog Night unless of course Three Dog Night is Canadian as well, which remains a distinct possibility. With loads of over-medium barked vocals, rawk guitars, top 40 songs about wimmen and total lack of cred on FM album rock stations, they helped pave the way for future Generic Music purveyors like Huey Lewis & the News to clog up the arteries of oldies stations. Kind of reminds me of the “rock” music you hear played by Banana Splits or Lancelot Link and the Evolution Revolution, which sounds like a compliment despite my intention.
Couldn’t find a picture sleeve please enjoy the picture of Canada’s #1 All Canadian Guess Who tribute band.

WET-”IT’S ALL IN VAIN”
Back in the old days I used to get excited to a band made up of a guy his girlfriend and some other guy (See: Swing Out Sister, Thompson Twins, Blue Zone). Usually the third wheel was jettisoned early on because seriously who needs 2 synthesizer players. I can’t pretend to know the personal relationships of this Brooklyn-based band, but much like the XX and London Grammar I am finding the music a little too snoozy for my tastes these days. If it’s too quiet I’m too old?

RUPERT HOLMES-”ESCAPE (THE PINA COLADA SONG)”
Move over "Margaritaville” -you aren’t the only overplayed mid-tempo ode to terrible 70s drinking habits and sexual frustration! Inferior to his follow-up “Him” and not plumbing the depths of the follow-up follow-up, the justly forgotten “Answering Machine”, Rupert really had the pulse of pre-”Big Chill” yuppiedom which means it’s still better than most of the most clichéd Motown hits not sung by stop-motion raisins.
Last seen writing a musical based on “The Nutty Professor” with Jerry Lewis and Marvin Hamlisch. Since Marvin died in 2012 someone better check on old Rupe.
