Herp Fact of the Week 04

The Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) is known for its aggression and very strong bite. Despite the animal's small size, its bites usually cause instant bleeding, and in some cases can require several stitches.

However, tokay geckos aren't just ferocious little biters- they're also great parents. Unlike most geckos, who will eat their young as a delicious snack, tokay geckos both stay with their eggs to protect them AND raise their babies. One scene I've seen a few times in videos from tokay gecko owners is that of two tokay geckos inside their hide, standing over their eggs and hissing at anyone who comes close.

Tokay gecko females will lay two eggs at a type like most geckos, and after laying she will glue them to a vertical surface or to the inside of her hide. She will continue laying eggs in this same spot.

Tokay geckos may sometimes be seen eating their eggs- but not for a snack! The geckos remove any infertile or dead eggs from their clutch, while leaving the healthy and fertilized eggs alone. After the babies hatch, she and her mate will raise the offspring.
