Hope you've all had a great weekend. It was a brilliant car boot sale at Allington today and I came back with a heap of unwanted junk to upcycled and repurpose into jewellery - including another toleware tin that I can't wait to work on. This was the last few bits of toleware that I had left which I turned into earrings and that are now available in my shop. I'm a bit obsessed with toleware especially toleware tea tins. I love the muted colours and faux oil painting textures. Toleware has a fascinating history and found its market in the West because the lacquer finish didn't rust and it was easy on the pocket, being nicknamed "the poor man's silver". I love that this type of wide brush painting was called “flowering”, and the women “flowered” or decorated the finished pieces, with beautiful hand painted designs. Some original hand painted pieces can quite rightly fetch a small fortune at auction. The depictions of flowers and leaves on a dark background gives me free spirit midsummer vibes. Starting to feel a bit cooped up after 4 days hiding from Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. Tomorrow looks to be somewhat nice, if still a bit breezy, so I’m heading to my local beach with Jeanie to see what the storms dragged in. I can’t wait! It’s been a wonderful weekend to chill the heck out, spend time with good friends and eat amazing home cooked food. And today I have felt the sparks of getting my creative mojo back with a completed make on the bench, produced without procrastination. Here’s a pair of earrings made from a Toleware tin, completed with salvaged pearls, Czech glass beads and grungy faux opals made using @fancifuldevices brilliant tutorial. What I like about her tutorial is that it’s allowing me to create the bead colours I am missing from my stash. I love the flexibility of that. Keep pushing through January and you will get to Spring. I’m keeping myself motivated by cooking something completely new a couple of times in the week. Turns out making Cod En Papillote isn’t that difficult and was worth the effort turning baking parchment and foil sheets into Cornish pasty shaped pillows. What are you trying new in January? . . .
