it's not just raining, it's pouring

Alice hadn't been able to sleep through storms since she was little. It wasn't that she was afraid, (though she had been, when she was young,) it was that they were loud. She woke up excited, heart pumping, and usually she would slip out the door and sit on the porch, wrapped in a blanket if it was cold.

But summer showers were her favorite, because she liked standing in the rain, and she liked not getting sick, and they went together hand in hand. 

Her eyes sprang open, rain water beating against her windows and the door that connected to the back porch. She attempted to sit up, only to find herself pinned by the arm of her gargantuan boyfriend. (Seriously, he's a giant.)

She carefully moves his arm up, glancing at her alarm clock. Two am. It wasn't so bad, she used to stay up this late just by herself. Waking up wasn't so bad. 

She slips from the sheets and pads across the carpet, unlocking the door and slipping out on to the cement patio. It was hot out, and humid. She shut the door behind her and wandered out into her yard, toes flexing in the wet grass.

She sighed, content, brushing strands of wet hair from her face. She hadn't done this in a while, and it was nice. Alice liked being outside, and she liked it when it rained.

"Alice, what are you doing?" She hears from behind her, a deep, somewhat groggy voice. 

She turns, "It's raining." It's dark out but she can sort of see his face, a bemused smirk on his face.

"I can see that." He says, walking out towards her. He's in a shirt and boxers, like she is, except they're both wearing his shirts, and they fit him a little bit better than her.

When he's close, he leans down and kisses her, and she smiles and she can feel him smile, too. "We should probably get back to bed." 

He nods, and they stand, drenched to the bone, for a second before turning back. She wrings her hair out on the patio before they head in, and when they get inside they strip out of their clothes and go back under the covers.

"Hey, Tom?" She mumbles.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for not thinking I'm weird."

He laughs a little and kisses the top of her head, and sleeping through the rest of the storm is easy as pie.

A slow taxi through the twinkling glitz Takes us past the megastores The whores, the poor, the rich in the Ritz Then I know Those old black and white movies were true

The pair sat quietly on the hood of Tom's car.  It was the first time they had been silent over the entire course of the night, which is a rare feat for a first date.  And it wasn't an awkward silence, it was comfortable.  It was nice.  This was the kind of date that Tom could get used to.  And for it to be with someone he was as attracted to as Alice Todd?  He was pretty damn lucky.  After accidentally hitting his phone, it lit up and showed him that the time was nearly four in the morning.  They had been sitting there for four whole hours.  Maybe even more.

"I should probably get you home," he said, sliding off the hood and planting his feet firmly on the ground.  She looked at him, smiled, and followed suit, climbing off the car.  "You should probably get to sleep if you have to spend the day with Jonah and Natalie.  So, probably."

It wasn't a long drive before Tom pulled the car up, in front of her house and parked in the street.  They both got out and he waited for Alice to join him on the driver's side.  They walked to her front door, with that comfortable silence filling the air of the equally silent neighborhood.  A moment went by when finally, he spoke up.  "I guess this is goodnight then."  She nodded with a small smile on her face.  And finally, he leaned in and gave her a goodnight kiss.  Their first kiss.  He'd remember this.  When he stepped back, she looked surprised, but happy.  And if the actual kiss was any judgement, she seemed to enjoy that too.  "I'd like to do this again," Tom said, looking down at the considerably shorter girl.

"Me too," she said softly.  The soon to be new couple exchanged their goodbyes and shared another kiss.  Tom could already tell that this was something special.

Tom pops the question!

It had been around two years since Tom had started dating Alice Todd.  They had been living together for a year of that, and if he was being honest he'd have to admit that he had never been happier in his life.  Alice was perfect to him.  And that's why he'd been thinking about this day for so long.  The first time the idea of marrying her popped into his head, he had only been dating her for three months.

Recently, the couple had gone to Chicago to visit a friend of Tom's from college and law school who had just gotten married.  It was, well, awkward at first (another story for another time), but they got through it and ended up having a pretty great time.  The ring had been burning a whole in his pocket for nearly two months now. so when they got back to Chapel Hill, it only took a few days for Tom to make the choice that now was the right time to propose.

Alice had always loved being in the rain.  When it would start raining she would go into her backyard and run around.  So his plan from the start had been to propose in the rain and the weather today was looking like rain.  "Do you want to go on a walk?" he asked, looking toward Alice, who was in the kitchen.  She nodded and Tom stood taking her by the hand, grabbing her coat, and walking out of the door.  Once they were outside, he helped her put on the coat he had previously grabbed and they were on their way again.  "Where are you off to so fast?" she asked, laughing a little bit.

"Nowhere special, just wanted to take a walk," he just looked ahead, his hand holding hers.  The walk was fairly silent for the pair, but occasionally some basic conversation would come up.  Nothing very special though.  Just when Tom was starting to think that the weather forecast had been wrong, the rain came.  And once it was pouring and both he and his future fiancee were soaking wet, he reached in his pocket for the ring.

"It's raining pretty hard.  Want to go home?" Alice asked, knowing Tom wasn't quite as keen on this type of weather as she was.  But he simply shook his head.  His free hand was clutching onto the ring in his pocket and his heart was racing like, a mile a minute.

"I love you Alice.  You know that, right?"  The much shorter blonde nodded her head, albeit looking a little worried. "Okay, good.  And I've been thinking about this for a really long time."  Tom stopped walking, stopping her as well.  "And we've been together for two years.  And those have been the best two years of my life."

"I feel a but coming on, please tell me there is no but," she interrupted, her worried look not budging.  He couldn't help but smile and laugh.  Her reaction, for some reason, made this less nerve wracking.  "No buts, I promise," he said, finally pulling out the ring while getting down onto his knee. "I love you, and I want the rest of my life to be like these past two years.  I know that's cheesy, but I want to marry you.  So, what I'm asking is... Alice Todd... will you be my wife?"  A huge smile crossed her face as Tom slipped the ring onto her finger.  "Yes, of course," she said eagerly, pulling on his hand for him to stand up.  And as he was standing, he lifted her up by the waist, kissing her.  This had gone even better than expected.

Tom Bruni Character Facts

Tom's father, Onofrio, was born and raised in Florence, Italy.  In fact, he lived there until he was twenty-four and met his future wife.  Then he returned to Chapel Hill with her.

He has one brother, ten years his senior, so really it was almost like growing up as an only child.  By the time he was eight, his brother was out of the house for college and by age eleven, he had moved out for good.  So his formative years were spent alone with his parents.  He's still not completely sure how he feels about that.

As far as girlfriends go, he had four prior to meeting Alice Todd.  The first was Emily Jacobs.  He was fourteen and they dated for about five months.  It was his freshman year in high school, it wasn't actually going to go anywhere.  The second was Anna Dakin who he started dating at age fifteen, the beginning of sophomore year.  But the pair broke up about three days after senior prom.  It wasn't a big deal, really.  There wasn't actually any chemistry between the two.  The third is the longest relationship he's had to date.  Tom met Dana Grogan on his first day of classes his freshman year at Duke and they began dating almost immediately.  The relationship always seemed to go along so smoothly, even with their occasional arguments.  They moved in together at the start of their junior year and stayed in that same apartment until they broke up after Tom's second year of law school.  She is the only girl who has ever made him think about marriage, but toward the end of their what had been amazing relationship, they started to grow distant, started fighting.  Their break up was for the best.  And Tom knows that even more so now than he did before.  As for number four, her name was Christine Walters.  He met her after moving back to Chapel Hill and they dated for almost seven months.  Both of them knew they weren't meant to be, so they had to end it for their own benefits.  He's dated on and off since then, but nothing has really stuck.  Until Alice, that is.

He's better at playing the piano then he gives himself credit for.  It's why he got his job at O-Bar, but he's convinced it's because nobody else applied.

He really loves nannying.  And he had never considered it before.  But taking care of Natalie and Jonah Howard really does make him happy.  The thing is though, they aren't always going to need a nanny, and he's not totally sure what he's going to do when that day comes.

Tom knows he wouldn't be happy working as a lawyer today, but part of him almost wishes he had finished law school.  It would give him something to fall back on.

He is terrified of the movie Labyrinth.  Okay, not terrified, but it really freaks him out.  No other movie is really like that for him.

His favorite movie, however, is Raging Bull.
