E-ever? That's such a big word lmao

Still, it has to be "put my heart in your pocket". It's a Tom Byrd/Lord John Grey story that follows the Lord John Grey books (Outlander spinoff series) and basically it was just me going and making my rarepair and slow-burn dreams a reality.

It's also the one that my amazing friend @mistresspandorawritesthings graciously bound for me and I cherish it so much. Just look at her:

An early little Halloween treat for the LJG fandom. Thank you for being patient with me while I get distracted by every urban fantasy and trash ship I come across. Posted with love and possibly a little necromancy.

Summary:

Private Detectives John Grey and Tom Byrd are investigating a series of murders. The details of the case hit increasingly close to home.

I have started writing this fic for the Trick or Twink event. Yes, this has been sitting in the purgatory of my deepest WIP folders for over a year. I had such a hard time finishing it and when I did, I wasn't happy with the result so I tricked myself into forgetting I ever did finish it. Then I saw that WIP fest here and wondered if I had some unfinished OL fics I could post. Found this fic and realized it was actually finished lol

So now I'm resurrecting this half-dead fic in the spirit of Halloween by my undying love for Tom Byrd. <3

This one is for you, and also for @carpelucem for sharing DB's insta story and sending this little bunny my way. Thank you both <3

40. “YOU DID WHAT?”

“Tell me what exactly did you do to this poor thing?”

It didn’t get any better on the second telling.

“It’s wool!” Tom protested close to tears. “You poured the water straight from the kettle…?”

John looked like a kicked animal.

“I didn’t know it was wool! It always felt so… light…”

Tom turned his gaze to the ceiling and found no answers why he fell in love with this man.

“Not every wool is for the Scottish weather! And then you put it to dry next to the fire!”

The waistcoat was beyond saving now.

“What even did you get on it?”

“Well… I was thinking of you, and…” John went bright pink as peonies. “I didn’t want you to get jealous. Please forgive me?”

Tom sighed. He wanted to kiss His Lordship’s stupid face. So he did.

“Only if you promise to never again launder your own garments without assistance.”

12. “it was an accident” and 17. “you heard me…Take. It. Off”

“It was an accident,” John said, hands held up placatingly.

But his valet was no spooked horse. Tom put his fists on his hips.

“I have spent hours on mending that exact same pair of breeches the last time you tore them, me lord.”

The title was like an afterthought. John was “me lord” only in company or when Tom didn’t think about it. Otherwise, he was “John” at dinner in private and “love” in bed.

“And now this!” Tom gestured at John’s bottom half. John’s crème-colored silk breeches had a huge black ink stain on them, with smaller spots splattered haphazardly around. The aftermath of spilling the inkwell into his lap.

“I’m sorry?” John attempted. Tom could be intimidating when he wanted to be. That is to say, only when John also craved him to take charge.

“You will be,” he stated darkly. John’s knees went weak with anticipation. “You heard me… Take. Them. Off.”

John was a soldier. Excellent at following orders.

His hands went to the fastening of his breeches.
