Quicksand - "Cosmonauts"
Wednesday, October 10: Quicksand, “Backward”
“Backward” opened Manic Compression with a brisk and brief slab of true alternative metal, at least as the term was understood in the mid ‘90s. In hindsight, Quicksand essentially defined the term during their brief run, as Walter Schreifels’ punkish vocals didn’t veer too far into either hardcore or grunge, while the rhythm section of future Deftones bassist Sergio Vega and Alan Cage exemplified the simultaneously funky and stiff push/pull style of the time. Tom Capone’s riffing was also of its time, presenting a different approach to metal guitar that still owed some debt to Tony Iommi. “Backward” encapsulated its era and epitomized Quicksand’s approach, earning the band its loyal cult following.
