The Duke of Hainaut is a rival to the Belgian royal family. He is the third child and first son of the late Charles de Ligne. The de Ligne are one of the oldest noble families of Belgium and they like to constantly remind everyone of that fact. Centuries ago they were granted the title of prince of Tournai by the Holy Roman Empire. It is honorific and does not entail any royal power or blood but the duke wears it proudly nevertheless.  

The de Ligne family still follows the male primogeniture law and that is why François inherited the title of Duke while he has two older sisters. For years, he has built himself a reputation while handling matters of his duchy. He is somewhat feared by some of the dukes and duchesses of Belgium. Several years ago, he offered to marry the crown princess of Belgium but king Albert refused. He also tried to make an arrangement with Giselle D’Orléans before that but also failed. He always had delusions of grandeur and aspired to more than just ruling over his duchy.  

François saw the king and queen’s tragic helicopter accident as an opportunity to expend his influence. The regency (the Belgian king is currently in a coma) was favourable grounds for intriguing. He betrayed his country and welcomed french soldiers in his duchy, bringing war to Belgium.

Nathaniel Danvers is the older brother to Rebekah and Lily Danvers. With both parents in politics, Nathaniel wanted to pursue a career somewhat close to them and decided his best bet would be law enforcement. After high school Nathaniel went off to the Navy and went to the Naval Police Academy. After he was honorably discharged from the military, Nathaniel went forward and pursued a career with the FBI; he was happily welcomed.

The background between Nathaniel and Rebekah are two very close siblings. While their younger sister deemed herself the black sheep of the family, Nathaniel and Rebekah tried their hardest to uplift their sister but gave up after Lily had gone off the deep end with drugs. To this day the two are very close and try to do weekly lunch dates to catch up.
