Kuelap: the "Machu Picchu of Northern Peru"
It is estimated that only one percent of the foreigners who go to visit the north of Lima, Peru. (Paracas and Nazca are south of Lima, Lake Titicaca, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Inca other sites are east / southeast of the Andes.) Probably only about one percent of that one percent to make the Chachapoyas fortress Kuelap.Claims been made, Kuelap above the Utcubamba River Valley, that it is the largest building of all ancient civilization, with three times as much stone as the greatest of the Egyptian pyramids. The walls are very large, up to 19 meters high, and enclosing a settlement about 600 meters long, 100 in width along the end of a natural ridge. but I believe that Kuelap was a fortified city, not a single building. (And I might mention that the pyramid in Cholula, near Puebla, Mexico is also larger than the Egyptian pyramids.) In the fort are some foundations and walls of 420 round (ed) Building and five rectangular. (Some think the latter are Inca constructions. The site was soon abandoned after the overthrow of the Spanish Empire and the ruins of the Inca were not the attention of the outside world called to 1843. Later, Adolf Bandelier have visited the site.) There. is a reconstructed house, complete with thatched roof (see accompanying photo), archaeologists have concluded there were three castes - workers, aristocrats and warriors - among the "Cloud Forest People Kuelap may have been a sanctuary such as Machu Picchu or have. for that matter, European castles, even though access to Machu Picchu from above and the only way is to get Kuelap, climbing to walls, from which arrows and threw stones down.Other could be used as the outer walls, the most impressive remaining structure is the north tower, where a transaction was found by projectiles. The stairs to the platform on which it is off limits.A number of lamas change location. I have a photo of two young ones.Below including the fortress, near some tables, sheltered by a thatched roof, is an advisory body which is rather minimal information available. I could not estimate population. Construction began on the 9th of Kuelap Century AD, long before the rise of the Inca Empire, with further strengthening and development. The Kuelap Chachapoyans surrendered to the Incas to 1470th My guess is that the tanks ran dry during a drought. There was room inside the fortress to grow food, and it is incomprehensible to me that an army could have overrun the site without heavy artillery. There are now three entrances, but it was only a long with a dam, only one person wide (that is, thrown a long distance with walls on both sides about 15 feet high form the top, the arrows and stones make each violation could outer gate). Kuelap is above the Utcubamba valley, between the Utcubamba and Maranyon (a major source of the Amazon, in the Utcubama flows on the long road to the Atlantic Ocean from a hundred miles of the Pacific). The height is 3,000 meters (almost 10,000 feet) and the ascent from the parking lot to the building entrance (10 soles - about $ 3.25US) and from there into the Citadel, a challenge for anyone present to the unaccustomed to the altitude. Kuelap is reportedly five kilometers from the lovely town of Tingo. Maybe the five kilometers in the air. The lodge where we stayed Choctamal (see below) was about ten minutes drive to (not in height direction) and Kuelap, which was visible from the lodge there was another fifteen minutes and 10-15 minutes walk up.There also a small settlement called Mary, who has built a craftsman's Co-op Store from El Instituto Italo-Peruvian) between Tigo and Kuelap done selling fairly simple patterns of weaving on backstrap looms (larger than the backstrap looms, with whom I trusted southern Mexico and Guatemala Clock) and some pedal-ones (such as in the weaving village in Oaxaca, where a friend taught me to weave once upon a time, and I stayed longer than one week). Some leaders say that there is no accommodation facility as provided Chachopoyas Kuelap (25 km) and only a hiking and mule track from Tigo. The Choctamal Lodge very good food and a room with four beds. More specifically, we are a bedroom with three beds, plus a lobby with had one. The first night was hot water. There was no electricity either night, for the power plant in Tigo was down, waited a few. Belts are from somewhere other shipped, so the city had no electricity. We had dinner by candlelight and there was a range of candles and matches for the room I discovered that I have to read 5 candles - literally that. Light five candles) Choctamal The Lodge promotes itself as a place of Marvelous Spatuletail (Hummingbird) with a Web site www.marvelousspatuletail.com (see what a good picture of the pair of "leveling", Keelung saw one to the hills one morning BTW). The staff seems not to have thought that the hummingbird feeders need to be filled in order to attract the hummingbirds to make the paying customers. Sitting outside our room (overlooking an empty hot tub), we had very close views sword bills to feeding on Datura flowers. Even with extravagantly long beaks, the hummingbirds had yet to dive into the pitcher flowers. Flowers and pollinators (the sword bills) significantly enhanced synergistically to wear with the flower in a position, the weight of the hummingbird. (The rate for a double room at the lodge is Choctamal $ 40us, with $ 6 for breakfast, $ 8 each for lunch and dinner.)
