Thailand itself is the country with the fourth-largest cassava cultivation area in the world. The problem posed by cassava cultivation is its rhizomes, which are agricultural waste containing up to 5 million tons per year. General agriculture chooses to eliminate cassava rhizomes by open burning. It generates 15 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. Thailand has been successful in agriculture. More than 25% of Thai people are farmers, who grow major crops such as rice and cassava. Each year, there are 55 million tons of crop waste of which 70% is being rid of by burning. This open burning of cassava stumps emits over 15 million metric tons of CO2 each year. The MEESOOK Cat Sand development team formed by ladies of 3 generations, who all have participated in UNIDO Global Cleantech Innovation Program (GCIP). We combine our specializations in non-chemical activated charcoal from cassava stumps and non-toxic, bio-degradable pulp from rice straws with the expertise in cat sand from PETSMILE company. We have received several national and global awards: TOM CASAVA - GCIP Thailand Winner 2016 - GCIP National Winner 2016 - GCIP Global Runner-up Award 2017 FANGTHAI FACTORY - Winner of Waste Beneficiation Award - Cleantech Open Forum 2018 PETSMILE - GCIP Thailand 2019 Aiming to reduce agricultural open burning, we raise awareness of environmental problems among the local farmers and introduce them to products made from crop waste.
