“As with most boys born in Cormyr, in his youth, Astellan wished to join the Purple Dragons, an order of knights renowned through all the realms for their discipline, skill, and loyalty. But a severe injury to his left leg and eye during a riding exercise saw his entry denied. Thinking he could still join the knights in combat as a battlefield healer, he became an acolyte to the Suzail (Cormyr’s capital) temple dedicated to Helm. As years went by, his understanding of the helmite dogma grew and his desire to seek glory on battlefield faded, as he discovered the common folk would always be more in need and deserving of his help and protection. Yet outside of the lands of the south, the worship of Helm was looked down upon after the events of the Time of Troubles and the Spellplague. As such, he ventured past the borders of the Forest Country and journeyed west to the Sword Coast, set on becoming a champion to the weak and the oppressed, and rekindling the belief and the trust in The Vigilant One. Escorting a farmer’s caravan along the Uldoon Trail led him to Greeneast only a few days before the dragon attack.”
This is Astellan Rekkart, a cleric of Helm I’m currently playing in a Hoard of the Dragon Queen/The Rise of Tiamat campaign. I’ve only played him for a couple of sessions so I haven’t been able to flesh out his character all that much. He is a soft spoken individual, collected, patient and wise, but with an air of melancholy around him; often the voice of reason in an otherwise twitchy-stabby party. The templar style helmet (a thing that is often made fun of by his fellow party members) is a memento he keeps from his days training as a knight - a reminder to always follow their code of conduct and honor.
