Had the thought that Kris is probably only letting the player control them so they can muster the strength and determination to survive in the dark world or something. Or maybe they're moreso just hurting all the time and their suffering is only here just so we (the player) can have a nice time exploring the dark worlds. (Hence, Kris' blood flowing to create the trees in the dark world in this art lol)
