PRINCE TOMMEN ( @tommein​ ) said “ i never asked to be like this. ” 

He looks down at the sniveling mess of a boy, so small, barely older than he was then-- he feels a flash of anger, then of pity and sighs, a sound like leaves on gravel. “ Neither did I but you don’t see me crying about it. That’s life, doesn’t matter what you asked for or what you want my Prince. You get what you get or what you can grab and you’re not as good at the grabbing as your brother and mother are. That’s not so bad a thing but this--” he gestures to the boy, still shaking and red faced. “ This won’t get you anywhere, you’ve got to toughen up or pretend that you have or you’ll be eaten alive.”

         “it is no fault, to wish to trust one’s family,” she says. this young prince is the youngest guest the high queen can remember having in such a long time, and the complications of family and politics that stem from his land by far the most entangled. “though they can be the ones who hurt us most of all when that trust is betrayed.” she smiles at him, and it is a softer smile than that given to many. “we can love our families and still not trust them,” she says at last. “there is no rule against it. and even if there were, i would say it was the sort of rule made to be broken, wouldn’t you agree?”

“ Oh Tommen no ! You’re not a bad person at all ! Don’t ever think that. You’re one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. ” She pulls him to her in tight hug. “ I can’t believe ever you’d think that. ”

What the Lords and Ladies were doing was unfair, giving this boy no choice in his Queen. She understands, though, why her Grandmother was insistent, why his grandfather was. They were to forge an alliance, and so this young king was one of the ones who would likely suffer it, as at some point he might realize as she did that his life was never his to truly live. She would be certain that he would never resent her for this match, however, she planned that he would never regret her. She would not be a bitter wife. She would start with just being his friend, because that was what the boy king needed right now, a friend in this court. She had the perfect idea on how to help him to warm up to her, as well, to know that she meant him well. She made her way to where she knew that Tommen would be, the servants had dare not keep that from her. “My King, might we talk?” she asked as she shifted the basket in her arms gently.

           “when i went to dorne, i left behind a little brother still not old enough to stem his tears when i stepped aboard the ship,” she says, remembering that day in the glitter of rainbow light from the septon, the touch of the sun on the water.  her smiles are smaller now, for once the movement had sent ripples of pain from the wound that had now begun to heal. and though smiles no longer hurt, the strange feeling of her new-healing skin still tugged strangely. (it takes an effort of will not to raise her finger to it, not to touch the strange new ridge of toughened skin upon her face.)  “how is it that i come home to find a wise young king in his place?”
