fun. Some Nights (Tour Edition) review
Fuelled By Ramen, 2012 Reviewed by Amy Theodore on 26 March 2013 Rated 4 out of 10 Key Track: It Gets Better
A deluxe edition that provides new spins on the band's hits.
The intro track is quite a quirky number, which fits in well with Jack Antonoff’s vocals and the offbeat nature of fun. themselves.
After the band’s three most famous tunes come out banging one after the other, ‘It Gets Better’ seems to step up the beat and gives the album a bit more of a rock feel, but the severe auto tune of the vocals ensures the maintenance of fun.’s sound.
‘All Alright’ is a track that throws the album off a bit, with Antonoff’s vocals sounding a bit off to the music and monotone, and it seems the guys got bored and went a bit nuts with the auto tune on ‘Stars’.
While the well-known tracks are a reminder of the band’s successes, it’s the added acoustic versions that make this record something different.
All the acoustic songs have a perfect combination of guitar and piano, with the vocals holding up without the fancy production and mixing behind them.
Janelle Monae’s vocals on ‘We Are Young’(Acoustic)’ also still sound beautiful, in fact even more beautiful with no instrumental noise drowning them out.
‘Why Am I The One’ (Acoustic)’ uses the piano to give the song a bit of difference in beat and tune to the original.
Overall, the added tracks are definitely of benefit to a record that has and overall circus feel to it, making this a re-issue worth listening to.
"Describing themselves as “having a cult following only second to Allah and The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, local six piece Mesa Cosa were a fine choice to kick off a great night of rock with a capital ‘R’ at Yah Yah’s. Imagine if The Birthday Party and the Dead Kennedys had a baby together. Mesa Cosa, specialising in highly impactful and in your face garage rock, featuring guitar torture and screaming vocals of the highest order, would be the result.
This is a party band to be reckoned with. With a set list that featured great tracks like “Los Perros”, “Day Of The Dead” and “Shoplifter”, Mesa Cosa proved to be hugely enjoyable and entertaining for the arriving patrons. This is a band to really keep an eye on in the future."
