Self Created Chapter (Fits after chapter 12 and before 13)
I woke up this morning remembering that Judith and Naomi went back to Connecticut to spend Christmas with her family. The thoughts from the events that occurred last night kept on replaying in my head. Those presents I wrapped were specially made for Judith, Naomi and my mother. To think I simply just granted the woman whose name I’ll never know the option to choose any of the presents. What would’ve happened if she picked the one that was meant for Naomi, what would she have thought about the messages I wrote for her in the diary. Whatever, that’s over now, why did I even think I was more important than their family anyway.
As I finally picked myself up from bed, it was already past 7:00am. Maybe I shouldn’t even open up the store today, I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend the day after Christmas with their families. I still look over at Judith’s house to look for signs of human activity despite knowing that they are gone. Guess that became a habit overtime.
“Morning Mrs. Davis,” I said to her as she does her usual morning routine on sweeping the sidewalk, “How are you today?” “Just fine.”
The conversation was rather short, that’s the way it was every morning since Judith and Naomi moved in. The streets are even more empty than usual, not sure how that’s even possible. The aisle inside my store are starting to get covered in dust again. The last time I cleaned it was when we had tea time together with Judith and Naomi, I was extremely anxious to continue reading the Brothers of Karamazov with the two. Nothing went according to plan today, although I didn’t expect much business, the arms on the clock sure took its sweet time today as this was one of my longest days before having Naomi’s company everyday after school.
The Logan Market was closed earlier than usual. On the way home, there were three birds that were just sitting there on the benches in front of the infamous statue at the Logan Circle. Maybe this was a sign, but then again, I may be overthinking. Since Christmas just passed I need sometime off as well, I assume Judith and Naomi wouldn’t be home anytime soon. Maybe I should catch up with Kenneth and Joseph and pay them a visit. Oh yeah, uncle Berhane too.

Biographical
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is a novel is based on the view of the protagonist, Sepha Stephanos who immigrated to Washington D.C. due to the war and military coup that is happening in his homeland of Ethiopia. Sepha currently takes residence in an area known as the Logan Circle, which the author describes as a lower class neighbourhood. Despite living in a less fortunate neighbourhood, he manages to keep a convenient store as a source of income. Like many others in Sepha’s neighbourhood, struggles with financial problems. Although Sepha is living in harsh conditions, he is optimistic about how the neighbourhood will go through a positive change at any moment. In addition to his struggles of paying bills, Sepha has constant thoughts regarding his old life in Ethiopia and as well as seeking to find a sense of belonging in Washington. The relationship between his neighbours Judith and Naomi impacted his life dramatically in his search for belonging, they resemble the family he wishes to have. These events cause a sense of diaspora as Sepha is finally adapting to the new country while having constant thoughts about his old life in his homeland.
