Title: (Not So) Similar Conditions

Summary: Tony and Bucky share a bed at a conference. It takes six months and some very different conference bed sharing with Rhodey for Tony to figure out exactly why cuddling with Bucky felt so awkward.

Young!Tony wearing large sweaters and walking around with his hair all messed up, ready to fight when people challenge him, works until 5 AM in the morning when he has class at 8 AM, lives from and in his coffee mug, sleeps like a cat on top of Rhodey’s bed despite his being ten feet away, wears glasses even though he doesn’t want to, the main reason why he wears them is because Rhodey says he looks cute in them, love cuddles and will always look for Rhodey to give him cuddles. 

Rhodey always gives them to him because Tony is his smol and he’s protective of his smol.

Tony and Rhodey have the best friendship in the mcu and also Rhodey is the best superhero... if you wanna hear more about that and why Tony doesn't like people worrying about him, I will gladly write nearly 1000 words about it

can we talk about protective Rhodey at MIT? What if Tony doesn't have any friends besides Rhodes. Rhodey's friends are always laughing at him and secretly don't like him and are using him (you had a hc like that, i think) and when Tony once comes to their room crying because of it, trying to act like everything is a+ fine and dandy, Rhodey goes to them and tells them "If you hurt one more emotional hair on his head, I will destroy you" Because no one is gonna mess with this boy who is his friend

Needless to say the second Rhodey catches his “friends” talk shit about Tony, they are no longer his friends.

He notices it the second Tony comes back, like- Tony’s holding himself a little too stiff, doesn’t meet Rhodey’s eyes when he greets him and Tony’s also wearing what Rhodey calls his “press smile”. 

Rhodey hates the press smile because it means Tony is hurting but trying hard not to let anyone see it. 

So he’d gather Tony close for a hug before asking him what happened and Tony doesn’t have the strength to lie to him so he tells the truth. 

Rhodey corners his so-called “friends” the next day and tells them to fuck off.

Whoever messes with Tony messes with Rhodey too.

headcanon: that for once when rhodey calls tony and asks him if everything is fine, tony truthfully says that "no" and tells him what's wrong

The most realistic setting for this to happen that comes to my mind is right after Civil War.

Tony’s at his wits end, let’s be honest.

Over the course of a few days, he was threatened by Ross, had to arrest his teammates (his family), watched his best friend get almost killed. He was blamed, over and over again, he almost had a heart attack.

He fought for his life after having to watch the murder of his parents on a fucking video tape - and he had to live through Steve, whom he’d thought he could trust, telling him that HE had known all along who had been responsible for the murder of Tony’s parents.

He probably hasn’t slept that much. He’s hurting all over, emotionally and physically. There’s barely anything left for Tony.

So yeah.

When Rhodey calls him, it’d be late at night. And Tony answers despite knowing he probably doesn’t have it in him to put up a strong facade. 

Rhodey doesn’t even say something at first, there’s just silence for a moment and then

“Tony.... are you okay?”

And Tony breaks. Think of him doing this desperate “I’m trying not to fall apart” smile that rips your heart out of your chest with how much HURT is in that smile before he chokes out “No. No i’m not.”

Before starting to cry.

the too emotional headcanon made me think that Rhodey knows Tony so well so he can just take one look at him and "shit, he's gonna cry" and then he's by his side

I do, in fact, agree with you here. Rhodey knows EXACTLY when Tony’s about to break. And like @briefpaperexpert wrote it so beautifully in their fic, Rhodey would be by Tony’s side in an instant and getting  him away from people so that Tony will be in private when he does lose control and starts crying.

And he slowly manages to calm Rhodey down, the shock passes and the determination in Rhodey kicks in. Because he's freaking gonna walk again okay, he is. And he knows Tony will help him. Meanwhile Tony is probably still panicking, the panic attack building inside of him, but then he has to go find Steve, then Siberia happens, and then he comes back, barely alive, kinda wishing he had died, but still determined to help Rhodey. And the he probably has the long anticipaded panic attack.

Imagine once he has calmed down and finds himself in Rhodey’s arms, Tony just kind of starts to cry, completely breaking down, because he shouldn’t be the one having to be comforted

Rhodey needs all the comfort right now, he’s going through what is most likely the hardest time of his life, so he should focus his energy on getting better, not having to deal with Tony’s breakdown.

((But Rhodey wouldn’t have any of this. He would comfort Tony - actually,it would be a two-way thing with Rhdoey being there for Tony, and Tony being there for Rhodey. As it should be in a friendship.))

whatever you do don't think about tony sitting at rhodey's bedside (before he woke up paralyzed) and just saying "please please please wake up" over and over again :)

Why are y’all onto me-

The suffocating fear Tony must have felt after rushing Rhodey into a hospital, while he already has FRIDAY scanning and cataloging Rhodey’s injuries and he’s calculating the chances of Rhodey waking up, of him fully healing and so on.

When Rhodey’s out of surgery and cared for at the moment, Tony refuses to leave his side even though he’s not family (he IS family though, at least they both feel like they are. They are brothers though not by blood) and he’s never been religious but in these long hours while Rhodey is unconscious, Tony prays for him.

Prays for Rhodey to wake up, never once letting go of his hand. Whispering quiet pleas into Rhodey’s skin, “Please, Rhodey, please. Wake up. I can’t lose you. Don’t do this to me, I beg you-”
