I did it. I put in my two weeks. I feel good, but I also feel weird. This is the first time I've voluntarily quit a job before and my brain is grappling with the concept. Still, it feels like a huge weight has been lifted.
One thing that is so, so important to me about Persona 3 thematically is that every character has an arc independent of the main character's actions. The central theme of the game is resolve and determination, and the fact that all of their personas evolve as part of the story and part of their personal growth has always felt so much more fulfilling to me than maxing their social link causing that to happen. I know it might be less interesting from a gameplay perspective since the player doesn't have any input in it, but I think it is also the primary reason that the cast of Persona 3 are so compelling to me as characters. Even in P3P, where you CAN have social links with all the characters, it feels to me less like I'm fixing their problems for them and more like I'm just... being a good friend and supporting them as they deal with the trials in their own lives. Their social links provide additional insight into them, but throughout the story you still get a clear picture of who each character is and what their struggles are.
My first playthrough of Persona 3 FES I didn't manage to do any of the available SEES social links (which back then were just Yukari, Mitsuru, and Fuuka) and yet by the end of the game I felt so close to these characters in a way that I haven't quite felt since, even though I love the series, and especially 5, a lot. For me there's also some part of the characterization that has been lost in all the spinoff games. The Q games do a better job than Arena, but the characters - both 3 and 4, but I think 3 specifically BECAUSE most of the spinoffs rely heavily on the audience having played Persona 4 - feel a lot more like caricatures reduced to easily digestible tropes and anime archetypes.
I've been P3 posting a lot as I play through P3P, but it's really letting me think about what I like about the game's writing and why. And it's just really reinforcing my strong positive feelings towards the game, regardless of what the fandom thinks.
