Well... I was going to post some cool project pics to celebrate 500 followers... But i don't have anything cool that i'm working on at the moment, so here's another lathe update. Since just stripping and repainting the cabinet wasn't enough of a pain in the ass, i decided that i might as well paint the whole damn lathe while i had it apart. And if that wasn't enough, i decided to get Fancy and pinstripe it! (Keep in mind that i have never pinstriped before, and i can barely be trusted with paint) The upside here is that regardless of how badly it turns out, i should be done this week, and can get back to working on steampunk stuff. Fiiiiiiiinally! The cabinet is done! And by done i mean i said 'good enough' and threw 2 quarts of primer and paint at it. Also casters, because i may need to move it around the shop. If i need to do this again, i think i'll have professionals do it and save myself the aggravation. Now i can re-assemble the lathe! (After i repaint some of the parts. Well, still no new project photos to share, but here's some infrastructure that i've been meaning to get to for FOREVER... This is my welding cart. There are a couple problems i've always had with it, specifically that the wheels are so small that they're basically useless on anything other than a perfectly smooth floor, which mine is not. The second issue is that i want to keep the plasma cutter on the bottom shelf, which is to short and not deep enough. The 2nd pic shows my solutions to both problems. I pulled the big casters off a cabinet that i'm going to use in another spot. They needed to be moved further apart to not run into each other, and to give the now-taller cart a wider base, so sheet steel to the rescue... I unbolted the top part and moved it back several inches and moved the shelf up several inches. I also had to cut a window into the back for access to the plasma's air line. I may paint it, or not... Robo-Karen requires interface with your manager unit... So, not much new here at the Department. Still waiting on lathe parts to arrive, so no movement on that project. Normally, this would be my last-minute scramble to finish projects before Wild Wild West con, but... You know, Covid. I have begun to plan for a restructuring and reorganizing of my shop, and even started playing around with the layout in Sketchup, but man that is a daunting task. There's also my mental state. I'm fine, or at least functionally so, but i just can't make myself get out and start working on things right now. Here's hoping i can shake it off and get back to work... Well. There's yer problem... One of them anyway... I knew when i bought the lathe that there was an issue with the gearbox, but i didn't know what it was. The small end of the gear on the right has 16 teeth. The one on the left, 4. They should be identical. I think someone might have tried to change gears while it was running under load? Regardless, it will need to be replaced. The Logan company still exists (sort of) but replacement gears are shockingly expensive.
