Why I don’t like the “Top comments” setting on You Tube
Basically what this means is that once a video has a hundred or so comments, about three or four of them will be pinned to the top of the section and whatever random comments have a few thumbs up will follow. It’s basically impossible to find any new comments.
Now I know what you are thinking “but isn’t there a “Newest first” option?” and you’re right, the problem is ”Top comments” is the default setting, so because people are lazy and the “Sort by” option isn’t very prominent, 95% of people won’t ever use it.
So if you ever leave a stand-alone comment on a video with hundreds of comments, chances are no one will ever see it. The only way you can be sure of people seeing your comments is either by replying to a “top comment”, which might not make sense depending on what you have to say and the top comment says or by getting a whole bunch of thumbs up, which isn’t going to happen if not one can see your comment in the first place!
Try reading the newest comments next time you are on You Tube, and while you’re at it, reply to some of them or give them thumbs up.
