Setup :: 2014 Yamaha FG700S [4.4 lbs]
A return customer recently picked up this inexpensive dread as a camping, beach, etc guitar. Unfortunately I found a top crack and recommended that he return / exchange the guitar since he purchased it only a few weeks ago. Bummer, this one didn't sound too bad and played really well. The crack was not a big deal to repair, but not on a new guitar.
Fingerboard extension top crack splint :: 2007 Pavan TP-30 [3.9 lbs]
This classical has a nasty crack in the top that runs along the bass side of the fingerboard clean into the sound hole. The crack had loosened the fingerboard brace so that was addressed first. Two cleats were then fit and glued to support the break (one along the fingerboard, one just inside the sound hole). This crack was far too open to just glue up (even with humidifying), so a thin spruce splint was fit, glued and trimmed into the crack with a minor color touch up to better match the top.
Dried out fingerboard brace re-glue :: 2007 Pavan TP-30
This nasty fingerboard extension crack took out the fingerboard brace in it's wake. Here the brace is being re-glued before fitting and gluing in two reinforcement cleats.
Nasty fingerboard extension top crack :: 2007 Pavan TP-30 classical
Here is a brutal fingerboard extension top crack on a classical. I sealed up the sound hole to internally humidify the guitar for a few days to see if the crack will close tight enough to glue. If not, then I’ll be fitting a splint along with re-gluing a loose brace and adding reinforcements.
Dried out top crack & bridge re-glue :: 1993 Martin 000-16 [4.1 lbs]
Low humidity caused a top crack that ran from the low E bridge pin to the tail. The bridge was also beginning to lift, so it was removed and the top crack repaired. Finally the bridge was refit and glued with hide glue.
