Stowers Institute to Launch Innovative Grad School

PhD candidate is jazzed about mathematics

See what this man did with a top PhD program. He was not the normal child playing with toys but instead he played with his mom's Texas Instruments calculator.

When he was five years old, Alex Bloemendal’s favourite toy wasn’t a fire truck or his Optimus Prime action figure. Nor was it the brown upright Bechstein piano he would come to master years later.

Bloemendal’s favourite toy was his mother’s Texas Instruments calculator.

As a child, Bloemendal always demonstrated an affinity for mathematics. But it wasn’t until high school, when he was attending University of Toronto Schools (UTS), that he was really challenged in the subject for the first time. “I had this teacher, Dr. Rice, who took me on and really engaged me,” Bloemendal recounted. “He showed me that math is this beautiful field and he really inspired me to continue in my studies.”

When I was in college, online college courses were nonexistent, let alone the opportunity to earn an entire degree online. In fact, I got my first computer when I was in college. Today, most households have at least one computer, wireless access and multiple cellphones with Internet capability.

When my 11-year-old son enters college, online degree programs and courses are going to be a standard part of the higher education experience. He already uses the Internet to do research and submit homework assignments. Just the other day, I “caught” him doing his homework on his iPod. Life sure is different. The traditional, college-age student is coming out of high school with a clear understanding of technology. It’s how they’re used to learning. So the college experience must broaden that learning, and build on it. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that 18.2 million students will be enrolled in an online degree program by 2013 — up from 3.1 million in the 2000-01 academic year

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to offer doctoral program in aquaculture/fisheries in fall 2011

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is set to begin offering a doctoral degree program in aquaculture/fisheries this fall, allowing the university to expand its research to address problems facing the aquaculture industry. The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the program at its meeting today in Mountain Home.

“This is a great day for UAPB but an even greater day for the industry,” said UAPB Chancellor Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. “My accolades go out to Dr. (Mary) Benjamin, Dr. (Carole) Engle and all those that worked to bring this together and especially the industry that supported us in moving in this direction.”

Benjamin is UAPB’s vice chancellor for academic affairs and Engle is director of the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence.

NYC Turing Fellows Program Announces Inaugural Class of Fellows

The NYC Turing Fellows Program today announced its inaugural class of Turing Fellows for the summer of 2011. The prestigious fellowship program matches outstanding computer science and engineering students with paid summer internships at leading technology startups in New York City. The program will host unique programming events over the summer to educate Turing Fellows on entrepreneurship, build relationships with outstanding technical mentors, and deepen ties to the NYC startup community. Finally, upon successful completion of their internships, the Fellows will each receive a $5,000 scholarship.

The 18 members of the NYC Turing Fellows' inaugural class were selected from over 750 undergraduate, masters, and PhD-level applicants to the program, with candidates from all of the top 20 computer science programs as ranked by US News & World Report. After extensive evaluation and review, 31 semi-finalists were selected and invited to New York City for a networking dinner on March 4th and then a full day of interviews on March 5th at the iconic New York Times building.
