Footballers or coaches in top European leagues are getting a high weekly wages but do you ever wonder how much do referees making? As compared to footballers, the referees are paid in peanuts. All the referee in premier league get a retainer fee and a standard match fee for every game they refereed throughout the season. In general, a referee can officiate a total of 10 to 35 matches in premier league.
In England, in order to officiate a game, you have to be recruited by Professional game match officials board (PGMOB) before the season starts. The number of games awarded to each referee is highly depending on the experience and performance. Usually, the match official for each game will be disclosed 2 days before the match.

Top performers like Howard Webb made around £120,000 in 2013-14 season while other top referees were making £90,000 to £100,000 per year. Unlike referee in Premier League, referee in other European leagues such as La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A are not entitled to retainer fee.
