Tora Tora
Tora Tora - Surprise Attack (1989)
Faces Rocks Magazine | May 1994
Thoughts on these? Anything left out?
Tora Tora, released in 1980 by GamePlan (and distributed in some regions by Century Electronics), is an early vertical shooter that blends fixed-screen action with simple but tense bomb-dropping mechanics. The name references the Japanese World War II code phrase, and the visuals loosely follow the theme: enemy planes sweep across the top of the screen while the player controls an anti-aircraft cannon at the bottom. Like many shooters of the period, the concept is straightforward, but the pressure escalates quickly due to the game’s unforgiving pacing and overlapping attack patterns.
The gameplay revolves around reading enemy formations and reacting before they overwhelm the base. Planes enter from one side, cross the screen and release bombs that descend toward the player’s cannon. Shots must be timed carefully, as the firing rate is limited and the projectile speed is slow enough that missed attempts carry consequences. Unlike later shooters that rely on scrolling stages, Tora Tora keeps the focus entirely on anticipation and timing: bomb trajectories overlap, enemy groups stack, and survival depends on positioning yourself precisely under approaching threats.
Visually, Tora Tora embraces the colorful but minimalistic style of early ’80s arcade hardware. Enemies are rendered as small aircraft silhouettes with bright outlines, while explosions flash briefly before the screen resets into its next attack cycle. Sound design consists of sharp beeps for shots, droning engine noises from the incoming planes and abrupt explosion tones when bombs land. These limited cues still manage to create a surprisingly taut rhythm, with each missed shot heightening the sense of vulnerability.
Despite its simple mechanics, Tora Tora distinguishes itself through sheer intensity. Bombs fall fast, enemy waves stack aggressively and mistakes accumulate quickly, producing a constant feeling of mounting pressure. It lacks the variety and scrolling spectacle that would define shooters later in the decade, but as an early fixed-position defense game, it offers a clean, challenging loop that rewards focus and quick reflexes. For arcade historians and enthusiasts of pre-1982 shooters, Tora Tora remains an interesting artifact — a snapshot of the transitional years between Space Invaders–inspired defenses and the more elaborate vertical shooters soon to emerge.

Touch, if you will, my stomach. Feel how it trembles inside.
I know times are changing.
Sometimes I feel so bad, lost in my shadow of pain, I feel like the sun is never gonna shine.
Lately, trouble winds are blowing hard, and I don't know if I can last.
"Somebody make the sun shine, somebody take this dark cloud away, help me, I'm drowning, mass confusion in my head"
Even the soldiers need a break sometimes.
Turn the lights off, strike a candle, listen to the groove and let it unwind your mind.
I don't know, I don't care, honey, let's go everywhere.
Take me to another world, take me tonight.
Without the help of a margarita or ecstasy, shoot me up, baby, let's take a trip.
Nothing's forbidden and nothing's taboo, it's all about being free, that's where I want to be.
Bring out what's been in me for far too long.
Tonight we're gonna jam from now until eternity, don't you stop, make it hot.
So long I have listened to your voice, I feel some kind of love for you and I don't even know your name.
Now my mind is open to poetry seldom heard, and I like it, I like it.
Plethora of euphoria in everything you do that keeps me satisfied.
Baby, baby, when I lay with you, there's no place I'd rather be.
You keep me happy, don't want this night to end if you're with me.
I want to meet you, kiss you, love you, miss you, and do it all over again.
If I'm stuck in some kind of groovy wet dream, don't pinch me.
I don't wanna wake up.
Take me away.
