bro the thing you said about dean not acting like toxic masculinity 101 has me fucked up cause like. he didn't start acting super repressed until after john died. he probably started pushing himself to be more like his dad because he felt like he had to be worthy of john's sacrifice. i'm sad.

In certain ways yes but in other ways no. I think s1 Dean was, for the most part, just as repressed. He was still his womanizer, tough exterior, i-only-listen-to-classic-rock-and-love-my-muscle-car self. (Granted he’s still mostly that minus the womanizer part) I think the thing that started changing after John died was he lost some of his carefree attitude and with it, he lost some of the times where that mask would slip away (at least for a while). But I think Dean’s repression and over-performed masculinity is rooted much deeper and comes from a life of living in the Hunter environment and having to overcompensate to make himself into an image of what his father wants him to be. On top of that, the overcompensation probably only got worse after he realized that he likes guys.
