Tornike Kipiani - “You” 38th Place

Time for a G&T refill~

You know how sometimes your Tinder match keeps texting you their whole life story and you’re not sure how to respond, so you just text back with “cool.” to not sound rude? That’s what writing about Georgia 2021 is like.

And it’s not like ... :pages through notes: ... “You” was a disappointment or badly performed. It was merely a total non-event, that’s all! It had a few cringe lines with all the sunshine & ocean bullshyte - (although Christian Ingebrigtsen has recently set a new low for “describing your lover to inanimate objects as a song premise”), but the rest landed in the opinion purgatory of “Neither Bad Nor Good, And Also Not Very Interesting”. Cool song bro, I guess. 

Of course the other cool thing about “You” was its reception at the contest itself. Everyone, including Tornike himself, fully knew “You” was a cipher going into rehearsals and said it was The Obvious Last Placer [that actually would not finish last because that’s how it always goes]. You may think this led to some sort of meta-humour but it usually amounted to Tornike dryly stating that “he was happy to be here. 🙂” into the world’s longest silence as everybody tried to figure out whether he was being sarcastic or not. Otherwise, he was treated like an animatronic version of the cupboard your drunk bachelorette aunt keeps her unmentionables in. Whether Tornike had a lobotomy after the traumatic event of fucking every mother in Georgia or whether he just has a REALLY bonedry sense of humour, we never found out, OH NO!!

At least we got that one funny rehearsal that Tornike sang in jibberish using a Kermit-voice. ❤ There is that, at least.
