More Petroglyphs - July 2018 Capitol Reef National Park, Torrey UT The pre-pueblo peoples were not the only ones who left messages as they traveled, but the nature of the desert and the desert varnish rocks on which they inscribed those messages meant that their thousands of years old symbols and images are the ones that are preserved. Yes, the images look sort of like space men, and taken out of context end up on some of the weird UFO conspiracy sites. Remember, these are drawn by pounding on a rock with another rock. And if you look closely, the “space helmet” often is not closed at the top. It is probably a stylized way of making a head... or horns, a symbol of power in many ancient peoples. The second image is the boardwalk which gives passage over the creek to the area when the glyphs are located. That’s Kathy on the scooter in the background. MWM
Historic Barn - July 2018 Capitol Reef National Park, Torrey UT Despite the ruggedness of the area around Capitol Reef, there is water and that means it was possible to eke out a living. There is a historic area which shows how the hard life was lived. There is also beauty, such as in this historic barn which is right alongside the roadway as you travel through the park. My wife, Kathy, took this picture. MWM #utah #torrey UT #capitol reef national park #barn
Capitol Reef National Park Torrey UT - July 2018 Capitol Reef was so named because the huge cliffs rose up out of the desert like giant barrier reefs across the trails (images 7 & 8) . The “Capitol” part of the name comes from the huge Navajo Sandstone domes which resemble the Capitol dome (Image 1). Capitol Reef National Park is a breathtaking place. If you walked all the trails you could spend days there and still not see the different views and vistas. We spent only a day there, but these ten images are a pretty good representation of the marvelous images available there. MWM #utah #torrey UT #capitol reef national park
