Unlikely Heroes || tothebeatofthesun
Gabriel had put in a frankly outstanding amount of work, trying to become the hero he’d always wanted to be: Everything from extensive physical training to endless nights of research. The one thing he couldn’t prepare for, however, was decision making under heavy pressure. So as he flew towards the bridge, arriving just in time to see the school bus tipping over the railing, he had to admit he went into a bit of a panic.
“Oh no, oh no.” What could he do to salvage the situation? His mind rushed through the options: The driver already seemed hard at work on trying to reverse back onto solid ground, but still the vehicle leaned perilously towards a drop that would no doubt cause quite a bit of damage. In a moment of brilliance (or perhaps stupidity, in retrospective) Gabriel dove forward, towards the nose of the bus, and put himself beneath its frame before trying to push it upwards.
It worked... kind of. Something about the way in which the bus was balanced made it so that Gabriel’s efforts stopped it from swinging back and forth at the edge. But unfortunately for Gabriel, buses were pretty heavy, and he was only thirteen: The crushing weight of the vehicle soon started to take its tool, and he realized he wouldn’t be able to prop it up the way he was going for much longer.
Frantically, he looked around -- as if hoping there would be some miracle worker waiting beneath the bridge for a situation just like this one. “Help!” He shouted, loudly as he could, in a desperate attempt to catch someone’s attention. “Someone needs to get the people out of the bus!”
