Hey, could you explain the difference between 和，跟，and 而? They all translate as "and" when I look them up, but are they interchangeable? Thank you so much!

Yes, you’re right that 和, 跟, and 而 all mean “and” but they’re not quite always interchangeable. Chinese is a bit complicated that way.

和 means “and” when you’re linking nouns and adjectives together. For example:

我喜欢香蕉和苹果。Wǒ xǐhuān xiāngjiāo hé píngguǒ. I like bananas and apples.

跟 means “and” but also in the sense of “with” and in this sense it can be interchangeable with 和 when linking nouns, but not when linking adjectives.

她跟她的朋友去看电影。Tā gēn tā de péngyǒu qù kàn diànyǐng.She and her friend go to the movies.

Here, you could also say “She went to the movies with her friend,” and the Chinese sentence would remain unchanged.

而 is a bit more complicated, because it’s not used to link nouns and adjectives, but rather verbs and phrases. In these cases, you cannot use 和 or 跟. 而 (or 而且) means “and” in the sense of “furthermore.”

我去了花园, 而且我看到的花非常美丽. Wǒ qùle huāyuán, érqiě wǒ kàn dàode huā fēicháng měilì.I went to the garden, and the flowers I saw were really pretty.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you this week? - I had an existential crisis and kinda still not over it. (Don't worry, though, I get them a lot).

Why is your icon-thing what it is? - It's a cuttlefish cause cuttle fish are cool. It used to be a matching icon with Cassie. And before that it was a flower from a squash plant I grew.

What kind of music do you like to listen to? - all 60s and 70s, 80s pop, bad modern pop music, alternate stuff (that is what you call it, right?) and movie scores.

What’s your favorite flower? - Daisies, sunflowers, lilacs
