VCO/VCF/VCA #5: TouchDAW
I recently switched from my beloved iPhone to an AndroidOS Galaxy SII from Samsung. The only reservations I had with the whole switch over was the fact that I had quite a few choice apps for the iPhone that just weren't available on the Android including Rebirth from Propellerhead & iMaschine from Native Instruments. These were both endless sources of entertainment for me on long ferry rides or waiting for my wife to pick me up from work or just plain killing time for the fun of it!
While I have missed those apps terribly over the past few months I've finally discovered a real musical use for my Android smartphone in the form of a slick MIDI via WIFI app called: TouchDAW. This program turns your touchscreen smartphone display into a MIDI controller for use with any of the major DAW softwares on the market. I use Ableton Live and the app integrated seamlessly into my setup. There are clear instructions on the TouchDAW website. The whole process went very easy and I was programming beats into Live within minutes, and all WIRELESS. There is something very liberating about tapping out beats MPC style on your controller while pacing the room in excitement.
The app has multiple screens including mixer, keyboard, X/Y controller, beat pads, clip launch buttons. All of the screens were well executed and the app never stalled out or had trouble communicating with my computer. The free download version has limited functionality so some of the transport and plugin controls do not work, but a full version can be had for under $5 from the Android market.
It blows my mind to think that I can get so much functionality for such a low price. Just a few years ago this kind of tech would set you back over $2000 for a Jazz Mutant Lemur, and now, it is in the palm of my hand.
