These guys were a total surprise and killed it the other night at the @yaawn_ release show. @toughageband is from Toronto and if you like an Indie-Superchunk type thing you’ll like them too. Grab a 7” or the very good LP from the shop or at www.ProgrammeHQ.com. #getwiththeprogramme #toughage (at Programme Skate & Sound)
@toughageband from Toronto, 🇨🇦 last night! We have some of their vinyl in store now so come grab it. #toughage #getwiththeprogramme (at Programme Skate & Sound)
On our way to Ottawa to play @megaphono (yah me and the lil alien guy but actually just me and @tricks_for_chips) Playing at 11:30! w/ #manmadehill and #toughage at @houseoftarg (at House of TARG)
So, just found out Timothy is getting bullied during school lunch because of his freckles. Kids calling him “ugly” and making him sit alone. The school will be notified. BUT that won’t really help the confusion, self-doubt & emotional damage already in play. What do you do? (Besides say otherwise)? I remember being that age and kids/teens saying things to me, my mother would wholeheartedly say otherwise, but I refused to believe her, giving more credibility to the stupid bullies.

PUP + Tough Age accidentally fall in love with Saskatoon
If you would have asked PUP their thoughts on the Saskatoon punk scene a few years ago, their response may not have been glowing. But after a few years of playing their faces off across Europe and North America, at this show, they had the crowd eating out of their sweaty hands.
Toronto based PUP has been riding the wave of a successful self titled album released earlier this year, touring with the likes of Hollarado and opening for the Hives in the UK. Their tenacious tour schedule has earned them respect from Rolling Stone, who included them in a list of Breakout Rock Acts of 2014. Not bad for a group of childhood friends who simply love to play punk rock.
The guys are still touring across North America, heading West through the prairies. Last night was the third time they've been through Saskatoon, and they seemed pleasantly surprised by the response this time around.
"You guys are more energetic than the last two crowds here, combined!" Lead singer Stefan Babcock congratulated midway through their set.
Tour mates, Tough Age from Vancouver joined PUP only a few days ago in Winnipeg. Frontman, Jarrett K. said they hadn't even met before being invited on tour, but it clicked in place so easily.
Despite some technical difficulties during Tough Age's set, it was truly loveable zippy punk with pop infused bursts and snarly vocals.
I came to appreciate the band more as they continued their short and sweet set, as pedals continued to malfunction and strings broke as if on cue. Their charming, can do attitude was not only entertaining but endearing, causing me to wonder what they would be like if all the ducks were in a row for them to play at their full potential.
A few stop-starts at a punk rock show never bothered anyone, and finally Jarrett quipped, "Fuck it. I'm plugging my pedal in. I wanna play the only damn song any of you came to see." The last two songs exploded with attitude, including a raucous cover of Ohio Express' 'Yummy Yummy Yummy.'
Definitely a charming, fun band I would check out again.
PUP didn't waste any time and bounded on stage in a fury. Within the first few songs they were all ready applauding three girls for 'getting' punk rock and starting the best 10 person mosh pit they'd ever seen.
Once they busted out 'Mabu,' a song about destroying a beloved car, the energy of the crowd amplified to the same recklessness as the music video of the same name. The band seemed amused.
Stage diving was highly encouraged during their celebrated single, 'Reservoir,' and the crowd continued to get crazier. One adventurous soul obliged and the team work necessary to achieve such a feat in a small crowd was automatically complimented by Babcock.
Nobody was losing any steam once the finale, a pumped up version of the Beastie Boy's 'Sabotage' started blasting. I don't think there was anybody in Amigos who wasn't yelling at the top of their lungs along with PUP. My neck might be a little sore from thrashing along, myself.
That's how they do it. A quick, strong kick to the head with violently enthusiastic sonic explosions left everyone wanting more. I think they accidentally fell in love with Saskatoon in the process.
Catch PUP and Tough Age as they continue on to Calgary Friday night at Broken City, and to Edmonton Saturday, October 11th as part of the Up + Downtown Festival at Mercer Tavern. Drink a cup of coffee or two before you go. You'll need the energy.
