He turns from examining the split lip he’d gained previously, taking her in, scrutinizing her intensely. She looks exhausted and aloof, her mind is clearly a thousand miles away from him as she stares out at the lush garden. He abandons his post at ensuring the future of his good looks to sit beside her, drawing her back from her rumination with his fingers on her chin.

“ Yes it is. it’s a dull and vicious beast that aims to rob you of all it can-- but you dear cousin, are more clever and have sharper teeth than any beast could dream of. The world doesn’t get to take from you, you take from IT. As is your gods given right as a Black, as a Malfoy, and as frankly one of the only worthwhile people alive.” He smiles slightly, feeling his lip complain and the twinge of the accompanying bruise.

   “These pearls were your great-grandmother’s.” Druella drapes the chain around Narcissa’s alabaster throat, securing it at the nape of her neck. “I wore them at my own wedding.” Something old, something borrowed-it ticked off two of the boxes. Now if only they were blue. Her hands come to rest on her daughter’s shoulders. “You look beautiful.”

    “  careful,  cuz.  ”  sirius warned with feigned cheer, his smile as friendly as the bared teeth of a wild dog. sirius had always been a vindictive child, poking at exposed vulnerabilities, untamed in his thinly veiled fury so often hurled at his family and it had not grown softer with age. now it was wrapped in barbed wire, ever since he had left his family home for good, ever since word had reached him that his mother had blasted his face off of the family portrait and cauterized him from their lineage, his sharp edges had only grown sharper.  “  wouldn’t  want  to  get  spotted  talking  to  me,  might  be  perceived  as  fraternizing.  ”

sirius had seen it coming -- perhaps not on that night or in that manner but he had seen it. after andromeda, perhaps even before andromeda, sirius had known that eventually either he would break or his mother would. their screaming matches as of late would last for hours, his father would attempt to intervene but it only escalated the arguments into ugliness and violence which sirius had long since stopped fearing. a battle of wills ending with sirius out on the street and his face burned off the tapestry.   good riddance.   sirius remembered thinking, for as much as there had been pain and anger and resentment, there had also been relief and triumph. freedom at last.

    “  i  don’t  think  our  poor  family  could  stomach  another  embarrassment  like  that,  do  you ?  ”  sirius asked, unable to help but poke at the black family’s fragility.  //  @toujoursfleure  ♡‘d  for  a  starter

         ‘ if i hear one more child say merlin’s beard, i am going to lose the last shreds of my sanity. ‘ it was always a mistake to visit the school. it was never fun and he always left with a migraine. really he just wanted a skiff scotch, but people kept handing him pumpkin juice. ‘ do i look like i have a beard? i haven’t had a beard in centuries. literal centuries. ‘

         ‘ PERHAPS I WILL --- ‘ he couldn’t help it, he loved to talk. and he would continue to talk up until someone forced him to shut up; which was difficult to do... unless they ended up tearing out his VOCAL CORDS of course. not that anyone would ever be able to do that but, he wouldn’t put past some of the people that he had come across in his life. including his father. ‘ you do realize that there are a ton of ways to prevent BLOOD STAINS on your clothes, right? ‘ he quirked a brow, and slipped in the seat across from her. ‘ i suppose but, it’s not like you’ve showed me just how CREATIVE you can be. ‘
