Radio Silence

Radio Silence is a young adult contemporary novel written by Alice Oseman. In the story, there's this girl named Frances Janvier who's a head girl in her school. She have excellent grades and a really cool mom. She's obsessed in getting admitted to University of Cambridge (so since she's one of the top students of her school she's basically expected by the people around her to have those desires and also expected to get it like it's a piece of cake). She have school friends but she doesn't feel very connected with them. Her friends aren't mean but she doesn't feel like she can express her authentic self to them. She developed a platonic relationship with Aled Last who to her surprise turns out to be the creator of her favorite youtube podcast, Universe City. Radio silence speaks about being confined in silence and being unable to express oneself. It also tackles the expectations to do the conventional things.The pressures of making practical decisions and fitting into the social norm. The book explores the concept of platonic relationship and it also covers the topic of good and bad parenting.

so it’s february and it’s friday

about a mounth ago i read radio silence by @chronicintrovert​ which is a lie. i’ve actually listened to the audiobook, narrated by Aysha Kala, whose performance i really enjoyed. first of all, the book is 6/5, go read it like right now, what are you doing, read it. second of all, i got the book because a booktuber was saying everyone should read it, but i had no idea what the book was about, so i went in without any expectations, and boy oh boy was that a journey. i feel like the usual stuff about the plot being interesting and the characters feeling real and relatable was already said many times about the book, which is a big accomplishment already, but i’d just want to make some random remarks instead of writing a review, everyone’s fine with that? okay. 

so the dog. i’m not one of those people who are offended or who get super emotional about fictional animal cruelty, my problem was that it feels like a really strange decision to create a bad character using the dog thing. like the book is awesome and i want a really bad bad character and it feels like i got a random person with the word ‘villan’ written on their forehead, which would be fine in a mediocre book, but not so much in this one.  

i had never felt so represented, i didn’t even know the way i percieve the world could be represented or needed representation, but radio silence did that, which felt nice. 

i’m trash for fictional fandoms, sign me up for a chudley cannons meeting or a universe city fan club.

Raine Sengupta is such a cool name and it is given to a nice character, although she feels a bit manic pixie, but i want to think she isn’t because she’s mainly into her own things rather than into making the mc feel better.

my experience at the uni was realy good, but school was shit for a lot of the reasons that the book explores, so again - relatable.

also i really don’t like it when in a book everything slowly falls apart, like i get it, that’s the point - to make me feel emotions, but for me that’s a bigger trigger warning than self harm and things like that. I’d still read a book with something like that, but in this particular one it really hit the wrong spot for some reason. It didn’t spoil the experience though.

i liked the pieces of culture mentionned in the book, from WttNV to NERO.

i started to re-listen to the book 2 days after i’d finished it, which is a rare thing for me.
