so i’ve been reading Bataille lately, l’histoire de l’oeil in particular. it feels very pure even though the language of it and almost all the scenes of the stories are vulgar. it’s similar to AC’s leah sublime, which, if you read it in context of his works, especially related to A.’.A.’., is a very pure poetry, but if you randomly stumbled upon it - it’s dirty. Bataille seems to be an anti-erotist who makes the topic destroy itself. strange book.

so it’s february and it’s friday

about a mounth ago i read radio silence by @chronicintrovert​ which is a lie. i’ve actually listened to the audiobook, narrated by Aysha Kala, whose performance i really enjoyed. first of all, the book is 6/5, go read it like right now, what are you doing, read it. second of all, i got the book because a booktuber was saying everyone should read it, but i had no idea what the book was about, so i went in without any expectations, and boy oh boy was that a journey. i feel like the usual stuff about the plot being interesting and the characters feeling real and relatable was already said many times about the book, which is a big accomplishment already, but i’d just want to make some random remarks instead of writing a review, everyone’s fine with that? okay. 

so the dog. i’m not one of those people who are offended or who get super emotional about fictional animal cruelty, my problem was that it feels like a really strange decision to create a bad character using the dog thing. like the book is awesome and i want a really bad bad character and it feels like i got a random person with the word ‘villan’ written on their forehead, which would be fine in a mediocre book, but not so much in this one.  

i had never felt so represented, i didn’t even know the way i percieve the world could be represented or needed representation, but radio silence did that, which felt nice. 

i’m trash for fictional fandoms, sign me up for a chudley cannons meeting or a universe city fan club.

Raine Sengupta is such a cool name and it is given to a nice character, although she feels a bit manic pixie, but i want to think she isn’t because she’s mainly into her own things rather than into making the mc feel better.

my experience at the uni was realy good, but school was shit for a lot of the reasons that the book explores, so again - relatable.

also i really don’t like it when in a book everything slowly falls apart, like i get it, that’s the point - to make me feel emotions, but for me that’s a bigger trigger warning than self harm and things like that. I’d still read a book with something like that, but in this particular one it really hit the wrong spot for some reason. It didn’t spoil the experience though.

i liked the pieces of culture mentionned in the book, from WttNV to NERO.

i started to re-listen to the book 2 days after i’d finished it, which is a rare thing for me.

so the bone houses

this time i want to share my impressions of ‘the bone houses’ by Emily Lloyd-Jones. first of all i picked this book up on audible because it was narrated by... you guessed it - Moira Quirk whose voice is my spirit animal. and boy oh boy did i enjoy the book! 

the story was fun to follow, the characters seemed real, i loved the names of places and people and non-human characters. the setting was just right. and there were details that just hit the right archetypes if you know what i mean. like you know when some magical detail just feels so right, so natural, so in tune with the world. yeah the book gave me that feeling.  

also the boy/girl relationship-without-cheesy-love as well as a bit of reversing the ‘conventional roles’... well done Emily Lloyd-Jones. it’d be cool to see some representation as well but i guess the setting is kind of medieval welsh fairy taiy feudal world and some things would probably make it seem too modern idk. also in a setting like this one i really want to see some herb and berry names and old meed drinks for some reason like heather and juniper berries.. is it just me? okay. anyhow i would highly recommend the book if you like dark european fairy tales, kick-ass but feminine female main characters and a slight brothers Grimm-ish touch of horror.

also just randomly throwing it in. i really like it when somewhere in the story the characters just stop and live in peace and quiet for a bit and then continue. rivendell from lotr, the leaky cauldron from hp and the beginning of almost every book in asoue would be the examples of what i mean. and there is a place like that in the bone houses. ok i’m done ty for reading.

so i’ll start spilling my bookish thoughts

as an intro i want to mention that there were a few periods in my life when i was reading different genres of books. i started with the classics just like many other kids who read whatever is in the school summer reading list. then i was really into philosophy because i had an awesone teacher at the uni. philosophy then shifted into the occult literature - a bit of thelema, a bit of wicca, some classics as well as some contemporary books (some of them you can see over on ins at abyssbooks). and finally now i’m into relatively contemporary fiction. it’s kind of difficult to talk about esoteric books with other people but fiction is fine so here i am.

ok now that that’s out of the way i want to write about Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. i’ve listened to the audiobook version narrated by Moira Quirk of whom i had never heard before but whose voice i fell in love with from the first lines. i enjoyed the book very much. i expect myself to be one of the last people to have read the book so i’ll let myself be spoilery-ish. i could see the character who was plot twist related from a mile away but i didn’t see the plot twist which is nice. and the way the mystery element was resolved was cool. and the characters were all well written. and there was some not-in-your-face representation which is always nice. overall the book was pleasant and the things i didn’t like could easily be written off to the book being the 1st in a trilogy so basically an introduction.

hi so i’m leaving my comfy read-only couch and actually using tumblr wow

so in 2019 i decided to read a lot more... actually i started listening to a lot more audiobooks and trying to write reviews on goodreads. i kinda want it to be organized because i’m trying to stop being a mess and i want to have as much stats about myself available as possible. so anyway i will try to keep up and use tumblr as a book related diary review thought collection thing. i never do new year resolutions because i just don’t need the pressure and it’s the end of january but let’s call it my resolution. yeah.
