The Tovarisch visited Baltimore, Maryland to participate in the 175th birthday celebration for the frigate U.S.S. Constellation. There is some debate over the rightful name, classification, and description of the ship. As we understand it, the original Constellation, reportedly named by George Washington, was built in 1797. Some parts from the original ship were incorporated into an 1854 warship of the same name, which was retired in 1954 and is a floating museum to this day in Baltimore. Deputy Minister of the Merchant Marine, Anatoli I. Tregubov, led the Soviet delegation that accompanied the Tovarisch crew during the training ship's visit to Baltimore. Mr. Tregubov was also on the last Soviet Merchant Marine ship (prior to 1972) that visited the East Coast of the United States in 1949. During that trip, the crew members were not allowed to leave the ship in New York or Philadelphia and were only given six hours ashore in Baltimore. During the 1972 visit, the Soviets visited several U.S. maritime schools along the eastern seaboard. He noted optimistically, “I think this has been a significant journey. It is possible that we have together driven the first nails in the new structure of mutual understanding." (Image: WHPO-D0313-18A)
