PSA: Caelin is Canon
“They embraced with all the warmth expected of reunited brothers, Caenis’s grip fierce, a small shudder escaping his chest. But still the blood-song trilled its warning...”
— Tower Lord (Anthony Ryan)
"He had many names. Although yet to reach his thirtieth year, history had seen fit to bestow him Titels aplenty:
Sword of the Realm to the mad king who sent him to plague us,
The Young Hawk to the man who followed him through trials of war,
Darkblade to his Cumbraelin enemies,
And, as I was to learn much later, Beral Shak Ur to the enigmatic tribes of the Great Northern Forest - the Shadow of the Raven."
-Anthony Ryan, Blood song
Raven’s Shadow
Tipsy 15 year old order novices Caenis and Vaelin sitting next to each other drinking wine in the stables
Caenis *internally*: Okay be cool just ask him
Caenis: So did it hurt?
Vaelin: What? When Master Sollis decided that I was too clumsy and kept beating me when I was already on the ground? Or are you talking about Spit kicking at me after practice? Or Northa putting a piece of bacon into my trousers before I went to the dog den?
Caenis:
Vaelin: Oh we are talking about the emotional trauma of learning that my father fucked another woman while my mother was dying and he was planning on giving me away
Caenis: I... Do you want to be alone for some time?
Vaelin: Just give me the bottle
Northa *stepping out from the shadows*: He gets whiney when he's drunk
Caenis: What the hell are you doing here?
Northa *taking a sip from the bottle*: Ya know the boys and I have a bet when you two will finally tumble through the hey tohether and I'm on guard duty to make sure we know all the embarrassing details of this epic romance
Vaelin: Romance? Oh you wanted to hit on me. You know I think I didn't fall from heaven if you ask me I crawled out of the deepest pits of hell
Northa: Allright no more drinking for you. Caenis if he doesn't pass out you have my ok to go on. I think he needs it badly right now and he didn't say no
Caenis: You are disgusting
Vaelin: No I am
Northa: Oh for fucks sake just kiss I only have till midnight!
Tower Lord (Raven’s Shadow 2) by Anthony Ryan
5 stars
I first wanted to give this four stars, but then I realized that I fricking loved this book (I was randomly thinking about it during one of my exams, oops) so I went with five instead.
So why did I love it?
A good question, that I'm not really able to answer. (as usually actually) But let's try.
I love the immense world the writer built. It consists of multiple countries, and cultures. It's so big that you're constantly discovering new parts.
I loved the characters. I didn't particularly care (I didn't dislike him, I was just another character.) for Vaelin in the previous book, so I was happy with the multiple pov's, I loved Frentis, Lyrna and Reva, more so with every page. I also liked that there were more women in this book.
And I just really liked the plot. (It gave me throwbacks to some of my favourite Dutch books.) And I found all the battle discriptions very vivid and enhancing. It really made me root for all characters.
And did I mention that I really like Lord Verniers parts (also in the previous book). I really like that he is constantly at the end of the timeline so it creates a tension for you know what will happen, but why and how? That's why you read the book.
(Also I was immensely satisfied when I realized who the so called witch was before the characters did.)
All together this book just hijacked my thoughts for a week, which is why I find it five-stars-worthy.
(Link to original review (There is actually one live-time reaction there.).)
So what are the best books that you all have read this year (can be more than one)?
