We have currently seen a surge in #pandemic within a pandemic with the rise of violence against women globally.with shelter in place there have been more domestic violence cases against women that have been reported world wide. . Here, I will focus on black women. With the deaths of #ToyinSalau, #BreonnaTaylor, the disappearance of Chavelle Dillion-Burgess and @megantheestaalion recent case is a high profile example just how unprotected black women are. There has been a dialogue, where black women say protect black women, and people say but. Why does protecting black women have to be conditional ? Why must a black women have to die or disappear to be heard? . The jokes that have been ridiculously made about Megan being shot have proven that we have become desensitized to the hurt and pain of black women. How is anyone being shot, funny? How is domestic violence glorified? Even being a victim of violence , we still don’t get the respect we deserve. #PROTECTBLACKWOMEN. DASSIT. . The layered eyes in my collages are spaces, which offer distancing from the being of the figure. The layering acts as security and comfort from the outside world. The simultaneous pandemic of violence against women has highlighted how safe spaces are needed for us. We need to hold spaces for reverence. Particularly for black women, as the most unprotected group in the world. The collages are representations of confident, self actualizing women. The alibiis bear double meaning, providing veiling for black women from an outside view of characterization and providing space because we deserve it. . The pandemic is revealing the need for introspection both inwardly and with our neighbors. Right now more than ever we are being challenged to reflect on our values, our will to overcome and fundamental #humanity. It’s our duty not only to triumph over the pandemic, but to come out on the other side of this resilient with a new level of respect and protection for women.
