Song of the Week #3
There's little doubt in my mind that Squirrel Flower's Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going will be one of the best albums of 2026, and its second single "Not Me" is my newest song of the week. I love that it was paired with b-side single "Sick Tooth," with each song showcasing what Ella Williams and her band do best. The latter recalls the fuzzed out, bootgazey sound of Tomorrow's Fire, while the former skews pure Americana. Absolutely no chance on earth I wasn't going to dig a Squirrel Flower song borne out of a dream in the New Mexican desert and imbued with the spirit of Linda Rondstat.

Honorary mention to a couple other songs also recorded at the mecca of the modern alt-country revival, Drop of Sun. Previously released under Ben K. Lochen's given name, the new version of "Ingrates" is an obvious highlight from the excellent new Idle County record. There's also plenty of candidates from Tracey Nelson's Hercules, but "That's More Like A Lover" stands out, in part for how it immediately brought to mind another classic by J.J. Cale.
