Fellow artists out there: I know it’s a pretty broad agreement that simply tracing rather than referencing is bad, especially tracing someone else’s work without their consent (consent to do that I’m guessing is pretty rare)
But I have to know, where is the line for tracing vs referencing? I mean, if I follow every line from an image, obviously that’s tracing and I’m not going to improve, but is scribbling quick shapes over an image to get the general shapes needed for the pose considered tracing?
Does tracing involve you putting another piece of paper (or layer in art programs) in any way shape or form over the original image rather than having it sitting off to the side and constantly looking back and forth?
I guess the question I’m trying to ask is...
...Is this still considered tracing?
