Track 06 - Energy Matrix (edit)

This track comes to us via DAT and 1995. I've jumped ahead here to post some 'better sounding' tunes. I love the hiss of cassettes, and have plenty more of them, but wanted to break up the flow a little bit.

I completely remember making this track.

I was working at Sam Ash in Huntington on Long Island at the time, and the Yamaha PSR-215 had just arrived at the store. Whenever I set up the keyboards for display I always did a run though of the sounds to see what was in them. Some of those old PCM sample playback synths had some really interesting sounds, and this one was no slacker! It had samples of a man saying the numbers 1 through 9. I think it even had a non-quantizing sequencer in it...

Anyways, I took it home for the night and sampled it. I thought -- wouldn't it be hysterical if he counted out of order? 'Cause of how everyone counts down in numerical sequence in songs? Also, would it be great to double up the numbers so that you couldn't 'sing along'? Hence this song. The bass sound in this track also came from it, as it was one of the kick drums on the machine, and I just over-drove the input on my s-550. 

To round out the sounds I used my trusty tr-505 for hats and ride, which always wins. Poor man's 909 ride (I always said). Lexicon vortex for that spacey wide synth sound, and voila. I edited this tune down because it originally clocked in at about 9 minutes, and no one really needs to listen to 9 minutes of some sampled dude counting out of order. Unfortunately I don't have the un-edited version, so this will just have to be one of the tunes without an original version.
