Here’s a short clip of a double training session. Things practiced in the video: Sit-Down-Sit-Down (“puppy pushups”), Wait, and Touch. It was the first and only attempt I made to record the training, so it’s not perfect. But I actually really like the imperfections because it shows me what areas need work.
Observations:
1. Mona does not snap her focus on your face as quickly as Drewbert. You see Drewbert will immediately seek and maintain eye contact until he gets the release cue. Mona is still staring off into nowhere (or the treat) for a good 2-4 seconds before she remembers she needs to look at YOU.
2. Mona released herself from the “Wait” half a second before she should have. I think she reacted based on the hand motion rather than the “Ok!”. Also, she didn’t make eye contact at all during the wait. I’ve seen her do way better than this, so I know she knows it. This just means we need to keep working to proof the command better.
Overall, she’s very smart and quick-minded for a 4.5 month old puppy. I’m pointing out these minor imperfections not to be a total nag/nitpick, but to let you know that training doesn’t happen overnight. It’s OKAY that she isn’t as tack-sharp in her responses as Drewbert. He has 3 years on her! Training is a process that involves a lot of micro-victories and baby steps, but as long as you’re patient, consistent and allow yourself to celebrate the tiny successes, you’ll get there eventually.
