A slow start to another lovely summer morning in White Forest. A day of rest and recuperation, and then the team would resume their training regime. Time moves forwards, uncompromisingly, as it always does.

Intermission II-- Finale

The lush trees of White Forest are replaced by the brittle young pines surrounding a campsite just north of Slateport City. The low hums of boisterous Unovan cities off in the distance shift to the sounds of the coastal ambiance of the Hoenn countryside. Buses become bike bells. Bird songs become the harsh calling of gull pokemon. The world is ten years younger...

Azusa wakes before Kirin, before anyone. ‘This will not do,’ she thinks to herself, ‘not at all.’

“WAKE UP, CHICKEN BUTT!” she squawks, with as much volume as her little lungs can exhale--which is a lot. Kirin wakes with a strangled yelp before a look of recognition, then relief, and then tired exasperation flash across her face.

“How did you get out of your pokeball?” Kirin growls as she snatches Azusa up from her pillow. She hopes weakly that maybe the other campers weren’t bothered by Azusa’s outburst and she’d be spared the embarrassment of their grumpy, pointed looks.

“If you squeeze me,” Azusa threatens “I’m gonna drop a nasty dookie on you!”

This is a familiar scene. The other campers stir with a groan before they roll over and fall back asleep. It is a new day.

Charlotte and her partner Ghost, a charmander she calls “Wormo” for some reason, are harder to wake than Kirin was. Charlie sleeps in when she’s nervous. To prevent another outburst Azusa is recalled to her pokeball, decorated with stickers from the hit Princess Paras(tm) franchise that Kirin bashfully tried to scratch off as a preteen when it was no longer “cool” to like “kids stuff”. It takes some effort to convince Charlie to get out of her sleeping bag.

“You excited to get into Slateport, Charlie?” Kirin asks as the two trainers are unchaining their bikes. Azusa has been released from her ball, and she and Ghost are play-wresting by their feet.

“Mmhmm... Well, I’m  nervous, too. You know how these trade chains can go; one person wants one thing and another person wants something else that a third person has, and it all works perfectly unless one person flakes and then everyone is screwed.” Charlotte is only older than Kirin by a year, but she is more restrained and grounded than her friend. She worried that Kirin’s headstrong attitude would get her into trouble. 

Kirin and Azusa had a tournament tonight in the big contest stadium. Their fighting style was reckless, always on the offensive. Charlie always felt like she was going to have a heart attack whenever she watched them battle.

“Did you hear about the Team Aqua sting on the Magma HQ?” Kirin scoops Azusa up onto her shoulder. “I hear Magma is pissed at them, I wonder how they’ll retaliate.”

“Hopefully they don’t drag civilians into their turf war stuff this time.”

Azusa and Kirin were more like sisters than pokemon and trainer. They squabbled and fought, and drove each other wild, but they understood each other better than anyone else. They were fiercely protective of one another. They were a great team. So great, Azusa boasted, that Kirin didn’t need any other pokemon.

And that was their gimmick: the trainer with only one pokemon who somehow managed to hold her own against others despite team size or type advantage. In reality, they won perhaps just a bit more than they lost, but when you give a teenager an inch of fame she’ll take a mile. Kirin and Azusa took and took, and thought they were invincible, and Charlotte was worried this would get them in trouble one day.

Charlie’s trade chain had been a success; she holds her new chikorita hatchling in her arms all throughout their celebratory dinner. Kirin and Azusa had also advanced on to the next bracket. Spirits were up all around.

“You’re so good at organizing those things!” Kirin gushed. “You should be--um--one of those people, you know? Those people who, like, organize those multidonor organ transplants! That’s kinda like trade-chaining?” she feeds Azusa a french fry.

“Hah, maybe, I never thought of that. What about you, what do you want to do for a career?”

“We’re going to be the champions of Hoenn, duh!” Azusa answers through a beak-full of fries. A thick swallow. She is denied more fries by Kirin, who nods seriously. Azusa pecks painfully at Kirin’s hand and steals another.

“Yeah, we’re gonna be champions. Ride this crazy train all the way to the top, you know? Maybe we’ll travel to other regions after that. I wanna see Kalos, and Alola, maybe Unova, too--you know, once the quarantine is lifted.”

It’s Charlie’s turn to nod. “Yeah, I’d love to get my hands on some of the Unovan starters, but that’s basically impossible right now... Which makes me just want one more.”

A month later, Kirin and Azusa advance on to the tournament semi-finals. Hearing rumors of some kind of public retaliation against Team Aqua, they follow a Magma grunt out of the stadium.

Three weeks after that, the Unovan quarantine embargo is lifted.
